I'm trying to remove the windshield trim pieces so that I can take the dash pad off. The top screw on each side is rusted so tight it won't budge. I've soaked them with penetrating oil, but I'm pretty sure that I am going to strip the screw in spite of this. I've heard that this is a typical rust spot on the older Stingrays. The rust doesn't seem too bad, but it's enough to freeze the screws. I'm thinking my only option is to drill them out (something I haven't done before). Any comments or suggestions would be much appreciated.

you may damage the trim drilling them out. most auto supplies sell a device called a impact driver, its basically a screwdriver that truns when hit on the back with a hammer. it shocks the screw and turns it while being pushed in and keeps from stripping the head. i have used mine for lots of tough screws and bolts.

If you do decide to drill it out, get some left hand drive drill bits. The Eastwood Company sells them. That way, as you drill, you're also applying force to remove the screw instead of driving it in as you would with a regular drill bit. They have a website that you can order off of.

Thanks guys for the replies. I did try the impact driver to no avail, then tried a screw retrieval bit, which broke off in the pilot hole. In the end I just pulled the trim piece. Fortunately, most of the rust was in the metal backing to the trim piece. There is some rust on the pillar but I should be able to take care of that. I will need to re-tap the trim screw that was rusted in the first place, but I will worry about that later. At least I was able to get the dash pads out and replace the speakers.

You guys have awesome looking vettes.

Dave

Of course, we forgot the good old "Just Hit It", which in reality is what you did! Works every time!
