Vette(s): 1971 T-top. I just had car shipped from my parents house in florida where it has sat for over 12 years..It is going to be a long project!
Ive have most of interior out of car and now trying to get the drivers side out(speedo/tach). Any hints on removing this side would be helpful. This is one thing I dont think I can |hammer| to remove.

Thanks, Ron

Make sure you unbolt the steering column an loosen the nuts on the floor where it goes through to allow it to drop down. I have found it a lot easier if you remove the pillar post moldings to allow the top cover to move up as well. You need to reach up and disconnect the speedo and tach cables from the back. I am assuming that the center gages are out already. Take your time and don't try to force it or it could crack.

Also you'll need to reach up under the dash and disconnect the speedo and tach drive cables. This is a challenge as the cables tend to not have much play in them.

a good point (as stated above)is to remove the pillar post, then the dash. If you dont you can still get it out but it can break the lower lh dash panel. I take mine in and out daily, because I'm still wiring the car from scratch. One big thing to remeber is the entire interior covers underlap and over lap each other, taking thing out in the wrong order can cause damage. I'm speaking from damage experience

I found it easiest to do with the dash pad off. Remove the pillar trim and then carefully remove the dash pad. There's only one screw, but several clips. If it's very cold you might want to heat with a hair drier first to avoid cracking it, it will need a little flexing to remove.

Ron:

I started this thread when I had this problem. Don't be fooled by the info in the Chassis Service Manual about how easy this looks - it is not! With some expert help, we removed the entire dash. First, we disconnected the steering column at the rag joint, removed the trim beneath it and lowered it all the way. We removed the interior dash side panels in the footwells (left and right) on both the driver and passenger sides of the car. We also removed the trim on the pillars on both sides. The top dash panel has screws that pass through a metal bar from underneath that extends all the wall from side to side of the car. You'll also have to remove the manual controls for the lights and wipers as well as the odometer reset knob at the bottom of the dash panel (leave the reset cable attached to the speedo). Once all of this is loosened and removed, you can pull the dash panel with the speedo and tach forward. Careful, though, there are something like 11 lights and connections (grounding straps) that you need to remember where they go. One big tip I got is to disconnect the speedo cable from the transmission and the tach cable from the distributor as this will allow you slack to really pull the panel out where you can see things and mark them well for reassembly. And then there's the reassembly.

Good luck!
Jim

Yes, center cluster and dash pad are already out..this was harder than I thought it would be and the corner did crack. I was going to put a new skin on it anyway. I dont think I would want to do this daily like some, my this skin on my hands could not handle this.. Im trying not to think about what Im going to have to do to get it back together |confusing| ..Thanks again to all.

I just removed mine to install a/c. The trip reset cable was around the main wireloom. I disconnected the reset cable under the dash to free it from the wire loom. On mine 1969 the back of the tach and speedo are marked to show the wire colors for the bulbs.
