I recently purchased a '68 roadster with a 4 spd.  The current shifter boot is rubber and has several tears in the rubber.  I ordered a replacement and it came but it is a leather boot.  Has the same 4 screws attachment.

I need assistant from anyone who has replace a shifter boot.  My issue is how to get the ball and reverse lock T off so that I can slide the leather boot over the shifter.

I don't know if I'm off base with my thinking of what I need to do to install the new boot.  If I am, I'd appreciate someone straightening me out and telling me the correct way to install or remove the shifter ball and lock out.

The shift knob just screws on/off(lefty loosey, righty tighty!). With the knob off, the "T" handle will pull straight out.
The early cars('68-'69) ONLY had the rubber boot...they dint have the leather upper boot, afaik.
You'll  need to remove the console trim panel...only four screws around the perimeter of it, and it comes up. You'll also need to disconnect the ciggy lighter wires. No big problem for any of it. Fairly simple job. Thumbs Up

Pay attention to the way the T-handle comes out and watch the spring that goes around the T-handle shaft. Easy to get confused how it goes back together again....don't ask how I know....Big smile

Joel and Dan T,

Thanks!!!  I'll try replacing it using your information and cautions as soon as my garage warms up a little.  Its been sub 0 for the last week and even thought my garage has stayed around 49 degress, I'm a transplanted So Cal boy that traded the population, polution and crime for beautiful mountains and affordable living.  I won't go back, I'll just wear a heavier coat for a few months of the year!

Thanks again so much!

God  Bless, rick

So are you thinking about replacing the existing rubber boot with the leather one?  I don't know much about the '68 and '69 that only had the rubber boot, but the later cars had both and from my experience with my '76, it's the rubber one that does the bulk of the actual "boot function" - the leather one is largely aesthetic.  You might not get the heat and sound insulation you want from just a leather one, but I could be wrong.  I guess since your current one is torn up, anything will be better than that!
