Vette(s): 74 coupe 4 speed 350, 54K actual miles, all original; paint, interior, engine, split bumper. #'s match. 2nd owner, no stress cracks.
Does anybody have a good reference to building your own speaker enclosures for behind the seats in the luggage area of my 74?   I am mainly interested in Bass, but any info would help.  Maybe a 8  inch or 10 inch subwoofer.  Maybe with just one speaker?  Also what is a good brand of subwoofer that has plenty of punchCool?  Something I can get from Crutchfields?  Any ideas or comments welcomed.....
                            ThanksThumbs%20Up, Steve

Vette(s): Silver 1974 Convertible - L82 4 speed Low miles (was only 8,900 when I bought it in March 2006) - Now 54K miles. Original owner bought it as an investment for son's college expenses. 2008 Jetstream Blue Convertible
I'm traveling this week, so I can't include pictures, but in my '74, I built a whole box that goes from the back edge of the storage compartments all the way to the back wall.  It also goes side to side.  It stands about five inches tall (fits in just below the convertible top).

Inside is a 10 disc changer, a stereo head unit and a powered subwoofer.  This was about the best solution I could come up with in the small space.  This all allows me to leave the factory radio in the dash (not that it works!) and still have great sound.  I also have small speakers in behind the kick panels.

The sub is not as powerful as some, but it was easy to install, and it comes with it's own enclosure.  Here's a link to it on Crutchfield's site...  http://www.crutchfield.com/S-MXj2CUyxaaZ/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?i=113KSCSW1

As for subs and enclosers... What do you want? good clear bass? or load rattle your filling bass? If its good clean bass ya want... you should look into 2 MA audio 8s in a sealed encloser. MA isn't the highest price subs out there,But they sound great.you should be abble to get a new set for about 80 bucks. As for the encloser they call for .8 cubic ft of air space each. Now if ya want harder bass you can go with a ported VT(virtal technology) style box. To bad VT is out of business,But on a up note thier patents were released. Alot of shops are reproducing their boxes. they are a ported box design. They aren't as clear as a sealed box, But take alot less power.I still  would go with the MA audio subs for either encloser. Now as for amps. MA audio make a good amp and are very well priced.I've never used 1 personaly, But know alot of ppl that have. Audiobahn also makes a good amp. I've personaly use 2 MA audio 10s with a rockford fosgate 300.2 amp in a 05 mazda 3 with a VT style box. They hit so hard  the sunroof crackedLOL.  Oh yeah the rockford retails for 230.00 roughly I got got mine new for 170.00. And you WILL need a high amp alternator or atleast a 1 farad stiffing capacitor or your light will dim badly. If you would like me to design a system for you i'll be glad to. I have a 74 myself so i can get the measurments. I don't know if your at woodworking or not, If you are i can just send ya the measurement for the box. Either kind you choose. You can PM me or email me if ya need more info.

Thanks for the input guys.  Actually I was curious whether anyone has utilized the wasted space behind the wheel wells for speakers?  I have been playing around with a pattern and can fit a 6x9.  My question is where can I find information on the volume of space in the enclosure to make the speaker max. eff.  Finding room for a 10" bass is another problem.

Thanks Marshall for your info.  If not too much trouble, Yes I would like to see a pic.
I would like to save as much luggage room as I can.
I have also heard of using compartment behind the pass side seat.

Thanks Jamie, what is Ma's brand?  I could fit 8" subs behind the wheel wells instead of the 6x9's.  I would like a bass that is sharp and clear.  I have been looking a Cructhfields for 8" or 10".

Corvette Enthusiast has an article on speakers this month for a C3.  They put some small ones in the door pillars and the heavy hardware in the back.

Don't know if this is what you are looking for, but they do a good job with the pix.

MA Audio is the brand.http://cgi.ebay.com/2-New-800-Watt-8-Inch-Subs-MA-Audio-HK80XC-Subwoofer-NR_W0QQitemZ110193000019QQihZ001QQcategoryZ18802QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I like this set. they are good a clear. I would put them in a sealed box.

I like this amp for what you are looking for:http://cgi.ebay.com/MA-AUDIO-M300XE-2-CHANNEL-AMPLIFIER-2-CHAN-CAR-AMP-NEW_W0QQitemZ300170438308QQihZ020QQcategoryZ39732QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

As for the encloser I can design 1 for the car. You'll just have to build it. Oh yeah! you'll need 1 of these. I keep the power rate low with the componets i posted so it won't hurt your charging system. But i do recomend a optima red top battery atleast.http://cgi.ebay.com/JL-AUDIO-XA-PCS8-1-AMPLIFIER-AMP-INSTALL-KIT-8-GAUGE_W0QQitemZ300170929871QQihZ020QQcategoryZ71529QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem

I'm putting basicly the same set up in my wifes car. If ya got anymore questions let me know.

I have an almost unlimited amount of room for luggage - it's called the US Post Office - I ship my luggage when I go anywhere!  The stereo box allows NO room for bags!  Wink

Marshall,
That is a good solution, as long as they don't lose it.
I guess you need to pack a small bag with your tooth brush and a pair of undies.Rolling%20On%20The%20Floor%20Laughing

Here is something similar to what you want that is for sale. It isn't made for the bass unit but it gives you the general idea and another option.
