Hey Guys,  I just got some insulation for the floor and console. I've never tried to take everything out to get to the bare floor. Any tips on console removal? Do you have to remove the gauge cluster too? I'm going to try this tommorrow, so any help or time saving tips would be appreciated. Thanks

Take out the seats before you try to remove the console components.  Much easier.  You don't need to remove the gauges.

Thanks, Ken. I did plan on doing that. I just didn't know what I'd be getting into trying to remove the shift console. A lot of the screws are stripped out. Any recommendations on what to fill the holes with so I can retap them? Dwain

Vette(s): 1972 coupe/350 cid/mild cam/4 spd/20 ft. paint (looks perfect from 20 ft.), but it sure runs nice.

About all I can offer is....Take your time inspecting and looking at every little corner of the usually unexposed areas. It may be years before you're in there again. Good luck.

If you are just filling small spots in the fiberglass, you can use an epoxy like JB Weld, and fill it in, then drill the hole and put the new screw in place.

BUT, most of the screws go into clips or retainers.  These can usually be flattened a bit where the screw bites to create a slightly smaller hole.  The screw gets a new bite and all is well. Sometimes a new clip is in order.

A hole drilled into sheet metal is another story. One trick I have used a lot is to put several strands of copper wire in the screw hole.  This takes up the space, and the copper is soft enough to mold itself into position.  You can get a very good grip.  And by bending the copper strands around both sides of the hole surfaces, it will stay in place when you put a panel etc in place and insert the screw.

Thanks. Sounds like a good idea. As for the shift console removal, I assume everything like the heater - a/c control and fiber optic assy. has to disconnected from the shift plate to get the console out, right? I'm beginning to think this is going to need more than an afternoon to do!

You may find if you remove the side covers, you don't need to take out the rest of the console.  The carpet may tuck up in very nicely.

I see what you mean about the carpet, but I'm trying to put insulation under the  carpet and was wanting to cover the top of the tunnel also. To do that, I'd have to take the console off. My carpet is fine, it just doesn't have any insulation under it. That's why I was asking about taking it off.

You may find you can leave everything connected, and just lift the entire assy enough to install the insulation.

Thanks, Ken. I'll definitely try that. Sounds much easier than what I'd expected. . If I'd stayed home tonite instead of playing Texas Hold'em at the Boat, I could have paid someone else to do it for me! Oh, well. Just never know how the cards are running. lol.  Good time tho....
