Goo-Gone works good on adhesive removal. I used a finger nail board, which is fine grade and thin.
Thanks for the advice all. Dwright, your wheel looks great with the overlay. (I wish I needed a new one). I notice you didn,t overlay the tach and speedo, or am I going blind?
How much was the "cheap stuff" and what is it made of?
It's made of fake wood plastic stuff.I guess like the manufactures use at the factory.Got it from one of the catalogs.Corvette Central has them. They call them no mar dash kits. They say that the ashtray door won't open on 77-82 but it ain't true.If you get the kit with dash speedo tach,it's $104.00.Without it's $79.00 zgator 2007-02-11 13:09:54

basically the overlays are plastic laminate or as everyone knows it as
formica. samething countertops are made of. the spray adheasive which
is supposed to bond it doesn't work very well. if you want to make sure
they stick use contact cement. brush a coating on the back of overlay
and on the matching console and let dry to touch. the glue sticks to
itself so make sure you have positioned exactly where it goes and set
in place. rub with pressure over whole surface and its done. i
doubt if you would be able to get it off without breaking it.

You are not going blind, but I did overlay the tach and speedo.
You can see it here. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/819487/3
The wheel was the first improvement I made to the Vette. The overlay doesn't match the wheel perfectly, but it is close.

Sounds like the same thing I got. Bought mine at Carlisle. Comes with double backed tape.
I would not use contact cement. That is too permanent for me.

door panels were peeling partly because it was contact paper someone
put on it. thats when i found out it was laminate. tried to use the
spray and it held as long as the clamp was on it
.
as i used to make countertops i knew what would hold it. plus all the
other pieces were loose and i did like it and knew i wanted to keep it.
hate doing work twice.
