Stop smoking or find a new place to put your change.(lol)

Does it open slightly an the laminate then rubs the inside diameter?

Every catalog I've seen that lists the inlays for sale states you won't be able to use the ashtray anymore after installing them. The thickness of the inlay precludes that. You can force it, but it will scratch and mar the inlay.

I haven't tried it but I was told a hair dryer would work. Just go slow and don't force it.
As for the ash tray, depending on what model you have and how you position the laminate on the ash tray door, you might be able to open it. If I have to, I can open mine, but it does touch.

Here is a Link to see a couple shots of mine.dwright2007-01-08 21:12:55

Mine is attached with small pieces of double-backed tape. Although I haven't tried it, I think it will come off with the aid of a hair dryer.
Can you save the laminate? Maybe. Might depend on how patient you are. And how sticky the tape is. And how old it is.
When (not if) I have to remove my console or radio, I will find out.

My cousin recently took the wood dash overlay off his '80 that he just got.  He used a heat gun and an adhesive remover.  Didn't have any problems and it looks stock again.  Its just one of those jobs you want to be careful and take your time with.

As far as opening the ashtray...  not sure would it would look like, but I wonder if you could take off the ashtray cover, get yourself a nice billet lighter and just leave it open if you need it?

WD 40 will take "sticky stuff" off too.  It may be a little "Greasy Grimey Gofer Gutty", but it can be cleaned off easy. Wink

I have a small bottle of Goo Gone that cleans up adhesive very nicely.
I think you can find it at most hardware and drug stores.
