Well, the car is broken yet again. After I lowered the car off the jack stands the other night, much to my disapointment, the key would not turn from the ON position to the OFF position. It rotates forward just fine so I can still start it, just have to stall it to get it turned off. Put it back in the air and pretty much determined that the problem is not down in the linkage so that leaves either the lock cylinder or the linkage going down through the column to the tranny. Anyone run across this before? It is a tilt-tele column and I don't want to rip it appart unless I absolutely have to. It was just restored last summer by a professional shop ( whose name I totally forget and can not find the paperwork on it ---just another senior moment ). |frown|

Glenn: There's a ton of steering column stuff on the Corvette FAQ website that you ought to check out. Maybe you'll find the location of the return spring or something else there that will help.

Vette(s): 1979 Black coupe. 11256 original, documented, miles on it when I bought it in April of 2000. It now has 13100 on it. Oyster interior, like new. Everything original, everything works, except the clock. Paint has a couple of minor flaws.

Glenn,

I just went through this problem a couple of months ago. You need a new ignition key lock. I bought mine at a nearby NAPA satore for about $16 I think. It came with two new keys, and the tumbler mechanism. You can find the info to change it on corvettefaq.com They have a very good selection of repair information....

Taking the steering column apart is not that complicated. The main problem is getting a "C" clip back in position, and I had to get my brother to help. You need about 6 hands.. |laugh|

Be real careful with the plastic parts, as they break very easily. Be sure to unhook the Battery too... |cheers|

Good luck.

If you need more help, e-mail me, and I will try to help as much as I can... |thumb|

I tried to send the info from corvettefaq, but the posting was too big. It wouldn't let the info go through. I'll send it to you e-mail. |cheers|

That info you sent me was great. All I need now is time to do it. I am in the process of running around trying to get people and business to either donate a door prize or to sponsor a trophy for our car show next month. Matter of fact, I am running out the door right after this post to a local merchant to give him our paperwork and to collect the door prize. Also want to check out a '93 triple black at a local dealer. He told me he was asking under 17 for it and I am just curious about it. ( Still want my '69 Chevelle convertible )

Have you checked to see if the lever bottom of the steering column in engine compartment is up? Should be a cable from the tranny if Manual tranny that raises the lever when in reverse.
allowing the removal of the Key!!!

It was definately the switch. The car is currently running but back in the shop for hood work.
Thanks for all the info on the switch problem.
