Topic: Leather Install
in Forum: C3 Interior
Hey guys,
I decided if I'm doing the install all over again, and spending all this mone already... I'm going all out and getting leather. I got the new Dash board, the trim is ok, however... the seats have rips in them (27 year old leather)
and the seats are kinda flat. So, I was going to get the $179 seat foam, and the Deluxe leather kit. How hard is it to install the foam, and put the leather on the seats? How hard is it to install the PRE-CUT carpeting? Does the kit come with new dor panels? Or is it just the material?
I'm only asking because a really good shop only wants $1,000 tahts the cheapest I've found. ANd they cambe to me by word of mouth localy. But To me $1,000 is a lot... adn I wan;t to try and save money. Maybe installt he carpeting, and door panels myself, adn then have them do the seats?
Thanks guys,
-Louis

Seat cover replacement is not hard. Just take your time and it will come out great. Check your seat bases and make sure they are not cracked. Look around the area where the seat back stops mount. I had a crack in one and the seat back stop mounting nut had broke loose. I welded in a stiffener on my seat base. Went to the local steel supply place and bought a couple of flat bar pieces. I ran a flat bar from side to side where the seat back nuts are. Then weld in place. see photo.
Here is a link showing the process for installing covers. http://rowleycorvette.com/corvette_repair2.html

You do want to replace the foam when installing new covers. Make sure to trim the flashing from the foam. Its the ridge along the mold parting line. If you don't, you will see the ridge telegraphing through the cover. Make sure to get the install kit. I comes with hog ring pliers, hog rings, wire hooks and a tool to pull the wires through the foam.

Installing the carpet is not hard either. Just takes a little time. I put down insulation between the carpet and floor. I use the stuff they wrap a/c ducts with. Its about 1/4" thick plastic bubble wrap with foil on each side. I bought it at Home Depot. I used 3M Super 77 adhesive to stick it to the floor(at Home Depot). I used Super 77 to stick the jute to the insulation and the super 77 to stick the carpet to the jute. You will need to trim the carpet some once in place. Do lots of test fits before you glue it in place and trim. Super 77 is an adhesive, not a glue so you can pull things apart if necessary. Here are a few shots of my interior. I did all this last winter.

If you have questions just let me know and have fun

Can anybody tell me what seats will fit my 1976 corvette? I would like to upgrade to a different type other than what came stock? More comfortable for long haul driving? Not racing seats? More like the 80 style? Will they fit and the best place to get complete seats ready to bolt in? Thanks for your assistance..Terry
P.S. I don't want to modify anything just drop in..

Terry,
I have heard of guys putting C5 seats in but I think they sit about 1" higher. Also think you will have to modify the floor for the power seat motor clearance. You could use the passenger seat which does not have power. I remember seeing an article somewhere on this. I also saw pictures of a set of Ferio (?) seats in stalled. They had them recovered and looked real nice.
