I have just one quick question. I have a 1972 corvette and want to remove the lower dash pad on the driver's side to replace an aftermarket speaker with an orginal or reproduction. Is there a secret to getting the lower dash pad out. Do you have to drop the steering column, or even take it out to get the dash pad out. I have everything loose but the steering column seems to be blocking the removal. I have tilt and telescoping steering column. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jimmie

on the 72 is the speaker in the dash or the kick panel ??

to remove the dash you have to loosen the steering column but not completely remove it..

The speaker is in the dash for the '72 model, one on the drivers side and one on the passenger side. There are no speakers in the kick panels. Jimmie

I have gone through this and it is a real PITA.

Yes you will have to drop the column. The more you can drop it the easier it is. Be careful not to pt too much pressusre on the column so you do not damage the energy absorbing feature on the column. Ultimately I pulled my column which was not bad at all. Sure made geting the dash out easier not to mention allowing better access to disconnect everything.

Be patient because disconnecting the speedo and tach require dexterity to say the least. You will have to push a button on the retainer that holds he speedo and tach cables on to the back of the gauges. If you have big hands, good luck!

While you have it apart you may want to replace all the bulbs in the cluster.

Once the dash is out, replacing the speaker is a can of corn.

Have fun!

There are a few posts that also refer to removing the dash top cover which allows easy access to stuff below. I haven't tried that yet, but it is an alternative.

It doesn't hurt to pull the center cluster and lay it to the side, after you lower the column you should have enough room to replace the headlite switch without pulling the pad, for you 4-speed guys if you have the dash out its a good time to check the clutch pedel bushings and the clutch pedal pin, I found out mine where bad and the pin was half wore through after I put it back together, now I have to do it again |frown| |laugh|

Thanks everyone for your help. I seems that I will have to lower the column morn than I have already, or as you said, just pull it out, I think that will be my best bet. Jimmie

Stuff's a lot easier to get at with the upper dash out of the way. This info is helpful:
