Vette(s): 1975 corvette stingray 13,000 miles 4 speed t-top in excellent condition
I recently bought a 1975 stingray unseen that the seller claims that the car has 13,000 origional miles. Ihave the origional title from when he bought the car, but my question is there something i should look for on the car that we'll tell me that this is actual milage or has the speedometer been turned back. From the looks of everything i can see it looks to be acturate.
Thanks for your help !!

even if the speedo wasn't turned back it could be 113,000 miles. I would think there would be obvious signs if theres was 10ok difference though.

Most of the time, if an odometer has been tampered with, it is obvious. Look to see if all of the numbers are lined up properly in the odo window. With the exception of the number for the 10ths, all of them should be perfectly straight across. It is EXTREMLY hard to roll the wheels back on an odo and make it un-noticeable.(don't ask how I would know!) Also, look at the brake and gas pedals; if there's a lot of miles on a car, thats usually the first place it will show, and most people don't think about that if they're trying to scam someone. Hope you made a good deal on it, it really sounds like a good buy if the milage is right. Enjoy it!!!! |thumb| |thumb| |wavey|ps: it's possible the speedo cable was disconnected for a while, too.

I agree there are times when it should be easy to see the diference in wear with the mileage difference. But on occasion it can fool you.

And while it is often easy to tell if the odometer has been changed, done right you can't tell at all. I have replaced many broken speedos with new or used units, and instead of making mileage statements just set the new or used unit to match the original one. Done carefully by a skilled tech, you can't tell by the numbers. No, I won't tell anyone how. And no, I have never turned one back to lie about mileage. I don't work that way. But when I do properly and legaly set one, you can't tell.

ive done it.. its not too hard... you dont need kens level of skill to get it right.. (not that it wouldnt help) but id go get one from a junk yard to practice on..

i messed up the one in my first galaxie.. got it right on the second one..

and ill need to adjust my current one when i put it back in.. it says ive got 540 miles on the car... when mileage records put it around 62K

When i had intentions of using my anolog gauges (before the digital surgery) I set my odometer at 0 miles and you couldn't tell. It was very easy. had I not broke the needle off the speedo it would have been a perfect conversion |laugh|

My point is it can be done and done right with very little effort.
