Yesterday my random question was the French locks, today it is this little number.  (I'm talking about the piece that slides with the parking brake lever as it's operated to cover the mechanism below)  I bought a new one since my old one was half gone but I'm having a heck of a time getting it to work right.  It keeps getting hung up, especially as I'm moving the lever from engaged to released.  It seems like the problem is there's no good place for it to slide forward.  I'm assuming it should moving right underneath the top of the console between the brake lever and the shifter?  Are there tracks under there that it should be sliding in?  Do I have to remove the whole console to get this thing installed?

Dave - yes to all questions but you should not have to remove the main console section.

The plastic filler piece your talking about rides in two tracks in the e-bake cover itself. That section of the cover is chromed metal and pretty obvious how the filler slides in. The excess portion of the filler slides under the main console when you release the brake.

There is no track system under the console but there is allot of other stuff that can snag the filler as it tries to slide forward. Power window wires are usually the culprit if you have PW. Remove the cover and take a look under the main console. There's something under there causing the snag.

Also note when you're installing the filler that there is a flat side on one end of the opening and a round side on the other. Again pretty obvious, just look at the shape of the e-brake handle, but installing it backwards can cause some issues.

Now the bad news is if you want to remove the e-brake cover, the best way to make sure everything comes apart and goes back together smoothly is to remove both seats. It's a whole lot easier to get at the two screws on each side and make final adjustments with the seats removed.

The second ugly of this removal is that if your e-brake cover has never been replaced, chances are that the original factory 1/4" bolt coming from the accessory compartment is still there and holding the back portion of the cover. Most of these get taken out and never reinstalled. It does however do some good. If yours is there, reinstall it. If not put a new one in.

And while your at it, have fun with that little filler panel that slides into the front of the e-brake cover. Getting it re-aligned with everything can be challenging. The key to the whole process is patience, ask me how I know !!

Good luck !!

Thanks, guys.  John - good info and most is what I expected.  On removing the seats prior to removing the cover - not needed on my car (although my bottom seat cushions probably should be replaced. Wink)   Good to know I don't have to take the entire tunnel apart to get this thing installed correctly.  I had the e-brake cover removed (minus detaching the power window wires) when I tried to install the slider, and, yes, it was obvious how it installs in that part, just wasn't too obvious about how it works forward of that.  I fussed with it for awhile and thought I had it, but apparently not.  It looks like one of the tracks in the cover got tweaked at some point in the past - I'm worried that's what's causing the problem (maybe how the original one broke, too).  I'll take it apart again some night this week and see if I can get it to work.

And yes, when I had it apart, I noticed there is supposed to be a bolt at the back of the brake cover and, sure enough - mine was missing.  I'll put a new one in.  Thanks!
