Vette(s): 1978 vette with an 80-82 stlye rear end molded in. BW six speed & an L82... for now. Lowered with VBP springs and bilsteins. Polished torq thrust wheels. New paint, audio system, aluminum radiator... Flowmaster and extreme flow exhaust components.
Has anyone here worked with plexiglas before? I'm going to be laying a thin sheet of it on my center console to customize it, to correct the shifter location hole. Any pointers? |idea|

Don't use plexiglass-spend the extra money and buy Lexan.
Plexiglass chips, cracks, snd shatters easily.Lexan(polycorbonate)is much nicer to work with and will give you the results that you are looking for.

Yes true but Lexan scratches very easily, even with a finger nail, so its a tossup.......... Lexan maybe bullit proof but it sure not scratch proof. Think about staying with the plex, you can even get tinted and or smoked, that may enhance your project.

If you can you should just make a new console out of fiberglass. This is pretty easy to do. Get what they call mold release wax. YOu can apply it to the entire console and make a plaster mould of the outside. Once the plaster dries seperating the two pieces will be easy and you will have a mirro or the console. Then use some body filler to clean up any of places in the mold. After that you can apply the mold release wax to the plaster and start applying layers of resin and fiberglass, slowly building it up to make a new console. Once its done you can cut out the shifter area, drill and add the trim pieces, paint it with a texture paint or cover it in vynil. Its a slow and long process, but you will end up with a custom piece that looks factory and looks better.

If your not comfortable doing this find a custom audio shop and they can do it for you.

If you are just going to utilize this as a top plate and not change out the entire console I would go with the smoked plexiglass. I would make a template out of corrugated first. Get this cut to fit exactly how you want it. (Including the drill holes) Take the plexiglass and cover this with masking tape. This way you can scribe the template over the top of it. Use a scroll saw with a fine metal cutting blade to make your design cuts with. (The masking tape will prevent the plexiglass from chipping out during your cuts. Once you have finished your cuts and drilled your holes you can buff the edges to restore the smooth shiny surface. |thumb|
