I am working on some minor details in between fixing my suspension and body and need a little advice.  My radio only picks up one station.  I think it is a problem with the antena, but even after removing it, cleaning it and re-installing, I still get no joy.  A complete replacement is not that expensive, unless you are saving for a whole new suspension and paint job, so any advice would be helpful.  Problem number 2 is my tach.  I bought a MSD pro-billet distributor with mechanical tach drive but the tach does not work.  I have checked the cable, it rotates freely and connects up to the distributor and the tach back just fine, I just cannot seem to figure out what is going on.  I never had a mechanical tach before so I need some help.

I am going to South America to spend Thanksgiving with some of my Soldiers fighting in the forgotten war, just wanted to say thanks to youall for all the support to our veterans, wanted to say so earlier, but I was out of the country until yesterday.

Happy Thangsgiving,

CSM Sends...

Jr, it sounds like one of two things.....
1) Tach is bad
2) End(s) of cable bad
If you connect the cable to the tach, and spin the end that goes to the dist., the tach should move. If not, then the end of the cable is twisted off, or the tach is damaged.
The cable ends should be square, on both ends(where they fit into the dist. drive gear, and the tach). If one(or both) ends are rounded off, it won't drive the tach.

Have a safe and Happy turkey day, and give our THANKS to the folks down there!!!

did the tach work before putting in the msd dist?  like adams apple said check the cable's end and the distributor drive input. make sure the square piece is long enuf to engage,(didnt fall/break off I hope).

Could try and attach it to a dremil  or drill chuck for a low speed test to rule out tach cable and needle, but you better figure out which way the tach cable is supposed to turn first.

And you don't like that radio station ?

Is there a lot of static noise ?  Is it am or fm?  While driving, can you hear the acceleration through the radio ?

I'm not sure about 68, but there should be a noise suppressor near the coil of the distributor.  You might have taken it out when you replaced your dist.

This is a long shot, but you can also look at how clean the connections are to the amplifier behind the dash pad.

You can get a cheap antenna, plug it in, hold it in you hand, and see what you get on the radio.  If it improves, it's a bad antenna.

Also, the ground plane for the antenna must be there, and it must be grounded to the chassis back there.
The ground plane is a sheet of aluminum that the ant. goes thru, under the body. There should be a ground strap screwed into the gnd. plane, that grounds to the chassis. If either of these parts are missing, the radio will not have any reception.
