Topic: Removed dash
in Forum: C3 Interior
Sunday I removed my dash on my 76 vette to replace the circuit board on my tach, and also to do some other repairs, i discovered this
large what seemed to be some sort of heat sink, under the right side dash behind the map pocket, about 4"x6",anybody knows what this is. I have a second question, did the 76's have speakers mounted in the
kick panels, and if not can speakers be mounted behind them. I found
speakers in the dash when I removed it, but not wired up. My sound system was modified by the previous owner.
I believe that is the amp for the original radio.
Speakers were in the dash in 76. You can fit a 4 x 6 speaker in the kick panels. That is how the 68 and 9s came from the factory. If you are looking for good sound, I suggest you build or buy a speaker box that fits in the cargo area. There are some excellent designs that look like the factory built them that way.
Hope that helps.

The size of the dash area where the radio fits wasn't big enough for a normal sized GM radio, so they had to make it in two pieces. The later cars(77-up) had the redesigned console, to accept normal stereo systems.

You can mount speakers in the kick panels, unless you have A/C, then it's not a good idea. The recirc. door is in the pass. side kick panel, so putting a speaker there is tough to do.

the kick panels use 4x6 speakers,I found replacement speakers in
some of the corvette catalogs, ecklers, corvette america, and corvette
central,or any good stereo shop has great speakers, alpine,or infinity
or pioneers. My slot where the original radio was cut out and sony cd
player was installed.
My stock radio is a piece of junk too!. did the same with the IpoD. I like the 200 watt Kenwood replacement in Corvette America or Ecklers Catalog. It comes with a new Dash panel to fit it too. Keep the original. I have some other things to take care on the priority list befoer I purchase it.
Just finished rewiring the vette, since I had the dash off I installed a Pioneer XM Radio...great sound. This radio is rated 60 watts X 4...good-by amp. Now I can hear the radio & have more room in the back.

What about speakers in the back?? I was thinking about box speakers, but there's not much room back there. I saw that Soundbar System in the Catalog that fits in the cargo area. Does anyone have those in their car? Maybe that would be too much with some really good 4X6's in the kick panels??!!!
Knotacare - where did you get the Pioneer and what do you have in your kick panels? Anything in the back?? I need to fix some wiring too and replace the relay for the air conditioning. How long did it take to rewire??

Right now I have a custom installion, the person I bought the car from
had special enclosers built, where the kick panels are with 6" alpine, but they protrude into the car foot wells not leaving much leg room.I
wanted to remove them and replace them with 4X6's in the original kick panels, but adam said because I have air cond.,they won't fit.I'll
probably go with new spaeakers in the dash. The entire back of the car,has custom built enclosers with 2 10" JL woofers ,and two amplifiers, one powerimg the woofers, and the other powering the 6"
speakers in the front and two more 6" behind the seats.
This forum is the greatest, The answer to my question about the silver object under the dash was right on. Yesterday I removed the
amplfier as its not being used anymore. Continuing dismantling the dash, as I am having heat problems as everyone else is,and want to
correct it,I discovered the vacuum operated defectors in ac/heat
distrubutor box are not working. there seems to be 3 vacuum valves that operate the the doors for the defroster, outside air and air cond, and heat conrolled by the console switch, any ideas what the problem is, I found a vacuum conrol switch in doc rebuild's catalog which mounts on the console select switch. could that be the problem,or could it be the main vacuum line feeding the switch. any
suggestions would be great
