I don't know if this is the right forum or not.

Can I remove my '75's speedometer cable for cleaning and lubing by disconneting it at the transmission or do I have to to remove the speedometer guage and get to it from the interior?

You will have to pull it out from the gauge end. I just did mine on a '77 I'm going to asume it's the same.
Remove the section of ductwork under the steeringwheel,(two small screws)
reach up and unscew the cable from the speedo
slide the cable out from the sleeve.
be sure to note which end is which so you put it back together right.
clean the cable,lightly grease it, reassemble.
inspect the ends of the cable.If they are rounded-off or twisted,replace it,they are only about $10 from any parts store. good luck

I see the cable and where it connects to the speedometer but I can't quite get to it to unscrew it.

So, foolishly I thought I'd take the dash panel out. The screws are out, the side panel off, and the steering column has been loosened and dropped somewhat. The dash panel is out from under the upper dash panel.

But it seems to be binding on something. Any ideas? I don't want to just pull until something breaks.

When I went through this, the first thing I missed was the screws from the side of the instrument cluster. Then I found that the speed-o cable was so short that I could just barely get my hand in from above to release it. It was also tough to install.

Thanks, Owen. Since the '76 has the same dash as the '75, the experiences should the same.

If you mean the screws on the guage cluster or the door edge, got 'em. The dash moves north, south, east, and west, just not forward. Sometimes it catches on the steering column sleeve, but when I move that, it still catches.

While it didn't seem to be the problem, perhaps it's, as you suggest, because the speedometer cable is too short. I'll check it more carefully.

Don't get over anxious and forceful! I got a little to rough with mine and the dash cracked up the center . I was able to repair it easily enough and the front cover was not damaged. Get the colum as low as possible and reach in from the top.

also try removing the steering column nuts under the column this will allow the column to drop about 1 inch and give you some more room . i did my tach cable this way

Gave up. I tried the suggestions, lowered the steering column, was able to get my hand on the cable, made sure it wasn't binding, etc. It felt like it was attached with a snap clip rather than a nut. I think I could have gotten it off, but there's no way I could put it back.

Maybe I'll see some of you at Carlisle for some other ideas. I'll try again next month.

I made the mistake in ignoring the advice of the service manual to remove the speedo cable at the beginning of my dash dis-assembly,and pulled the back off of the speedo.As soon as you can get access to it,by removing the cover at the base of the steering column,disconnect the cable by dislodging the snap clip that holds it in.

If yours is the snap clip, push the cable toward the gauge, then depress the clip and pull back on the cable. It will come right off.
