I removed the bolts from the bottom of the steering column, but the column only went down a few inches -- not enough to get the instrument panel out.
What am I missing?
This is on a 75 coupe.

I suspect that you'll need to disconnect the rag joint and pull the column out.

Do you have the factory service manual? They're extremely helpful in doing jobs like this.

Thanks for the instructions.  This should help much.  I looked at the column a while ago, and was a bit intimated, mostly because I was not familiar with the shift interlock, and did not want to disturb it.
If I get ambitious tomorrow, I'll take a stab at it.  I'll let you know how I make out with it.

You might try just loosening the two bolts down at the base of the column on the floor.  That may drop it somemore to give you more room.  I've been able to get mine out by doing this.

Well, its been a while since I posted this question.  In the meantime, I have had the column out (twice).  It actually was not too bad to get it out, but it took two to put it back in.  While it was out I replaced the rag joint, which surprisingly tightened up the steering play quite a bit.
Thanks for the help!

I just pull down on the steering column to get enough clearance and wiggle the left dash out after the head light plug is disconnected. make sure all the other screws are out around the dash and the wires unplugged(dash lights). It works for me several times.

I replaced my tach on a 75 a long time ago and I know I didn't disconnect the rag joint
