I am looking to repaint the center console, fiber optics panel & the wiper switch mount. The only thing I cant find a solution for is masking the chrome lettering and features on these parts? I was thinking about buffing off the lettering after I paint them but the chrome plating is in really good condition and dont want to chance it.
Any ideas???
Thanks,
Bill

When I painted all my center sections including console, I painted with canned black trim paint and then immediately cleaned, very carefully, all the raised chrome parts I didn't want paint on with lacquer thinner. Worked for me.

A clean razor blade, and a steady hand works well to scrape paint off of the raised chrome trim, and lettering.

I masked my seat bezels then did cleanup using a razor blade. No problems.

I just painted my upper vent controls and sprayed over the chrome wiper lettering. After the paint dried (over night) I used a small flat-head screwdriver to lightly scrape the paint off. This worked fine, just takes a steady hand.
Has anyone else tried this? Is this a horrible idea?

I did not do this with my console, but I have done it elsewhere: I wiped the tops of the letters off while the paint is wet. Worked great, just be careful not touch the paint that stays so it does not get messed up. I used a Q-tip to do it.

The grease will work but often leaves an uneven edge. Depends on how careful you apply it. For finline masking I use the super thin vinyl masking tape from an auto paint supplier. 1/8" is the narrowest I've seen and its offered by 3M. It can be bent and follows curves very nicely and sticks great. But, I don't think it will work on those small letters but will work great on all the other runs.
