I have a 80 four speed vette I am trying to replace shift knob. after screwing off the knob I measured the with of the thred patteren it is a half of inch is that standard for the shifter? I ordered one on line and it is to small it wont fit over threads. They said it was a standard knob for the vette. 5/16 could this be a different shifter? as I compare both knobs, my old one is a lot bigger in the inside. I took a hanger and took off the long hard card bord stick and stuck it in my old knob it fit perfect

Sounds like the knob you got is not for a 'Vette...all of the 4speed shifters I know of(BW & Muncie) for Corvettes have a larger shaft thread, for the reverse lock-out to fit down into. Is the knob you got black chrome?
I just went out and uncovered my '74 and checked mine...it is 1/2 too.

Take both knobs to a machine shop and they can fix it while ya wait for a small nominal fee. It's probally the lesser of 2 evils compared to sending it back.

You know Adam I tried all day to do what you did to my pic. I had the pics a while ago I just could not figure it out. Do I have to paste pic every time I reply to a post? I have other pics I want to post. The windshield frame was rusted out so I cut off frame and welded another frame on, and replaced windshield and other things. it might be helpful to others. Im still looking for a chrom shift knob
