My 74 Corvette has no sound from the right speaker. In order to check this I need to get to the speaker. What is involved in removing this speaker? Do I have to take the dash pad out and if so what is the easiest way without damaging anything. Also are there speakers in the lower kick panels of the older vettes? If not can they be added by just splicing into the upper speakers or is that a waste of time?
Thanks,
Rodney

Vette(s): My 1974 Vette sold last August 2014. I am still willing to show up to events and local gatherings if anything happening No new vette yet.
I have a 74.

In order to replace the right speaker you have to take the dash pad entirely out. It is rivetted to the bottom of the pad and has to be taken out carefully (as the old ones are brittle). The pad is in with clips by the windshield and is screwed in the front on all of the panels. I had to take down the passenger side panel where the owners manual sits as well.  Under the dash pad, it is screwed into a bracket which you will have to get at.  Basically it is easier to do it by going step by step. take pictures so you know how to put the car back together again.  Get instructions or a full size Chiltons on step by step to replacing the speakers or radio.

As for the kick panels, the older C3s had speakers down there but you have very limited space. the 74 doesn't have any speakers there nor does it have wiring there for any either.  if you want to run speakers there and the top ones, you are in for a project. taking the factory radio out of the car is a chore. The car is set up for two speakers, not four.  it took me a week to do mine and the dash pad.  i am not saying dont do it.  Just do your home work on it first before you proceed.

Thanks for the input. My biggest worry is getting the dash pad off with out damaging it and then getting it back on without it cracking. I saw one that had a pad replaced and it was waving and looked terrible. My guess would be to do it before it gets to cold so that the pad doesnt crack from the extra britleness the temp will have on it.
By the way, the pic of your vette is nice. Are they side pipes? Any other photos you have to share. I just got mine about a month ago and havent decided where to start. It only has 25000 miles so it is in pretty good shape and all original.
Do you have pics of when you had your pad out?
You can email me directly at rod7515@comcast.net
Thanks again.

If your dash pad is the original, you stand a very good chance of cracking it or poking a hole in it. I poke a hole in mine at the very end of my project.
Replacing it will cost you about $350.
If you only want 2 speakers working consider putting 2 new ones in the kit panel, taking out your radio and disconnecting the one speaker, and splicing two new speakers into the harness is a lot easier and cheaper than taking the dash out and possibly damaging it. I used Infinity Kappa 4x6 in my kit panels and they fit perfect. They also sound a lot better than the factory ones. It all depends on what you want. There are a number of postings that give a lot more detail on this subject.

i have pics but not ones on the computer.  i got a regular pics taken.  in my car i put two speakers in a slim box behind my head.  I have a 4 channel radio in my car so the rear speakers have their own wires.  i still have space in my car for my tops and some things if needed.  Where are you located compared to where i am? i live off exit 33 on rt 78 in New jersey.  suppose we could meet up somewhere closer and maybe warbird and whoever else has a 74 can as well and talk then.

Rodney,
If it's easier for you and you want more detail information PM me with a phone number where I can reach you.
I set up my system based on a suggestion posted by Redwingvette, and very similar to Jeremy's setup. My rear compartment has 2 6x9's plus a 360 Amp, and I can still fit my T-Tops with no problem.
