While I had the dash out, I decided to lube the speedo cable. I pulled it out about 8 inches and inspected it. It was covered in metalic looking gease (from not being cleaned or lubed for 30 years). Any suggestions on the best way to clean it?

I decided that I would wait to get some new white grease, and went to push the cable back in. It went in about 4 inches and stopped. Has anyone got a trick to this, or do I need to pop off the trannie end to get it back in? |headscratch|
Thanks,
Glenn

Any cleaner will work. Usually you need to dry it off after cleaning, or the residual cleaner will break down the new lube. I usually just wipe it off and relube. White grease works well. A very light coating of wheel bearing grease also works very well.

To reinstall the cable you may need to rotate it as you push it back into the housing. You will need to rotate it a bit unless you are lucky to get it to mesh into the gear in the tranny. You have 4 positions in one rotation it will drop in. Then give it a straight push to finish the install. If it won't go all of the way, take the cable loose from the tranny, insert the cable, then hook it back up at the tranny.
