Is there an easy way to remove these. I have pulled the 5 screws, that appears to be the only thing holding it in place but it still will not come out. I need this out as the tack is not working at all, and is frozen at about 3000 rpm. Any help would be appreciated..

thanks

I believe you have an '80 Vette, so the procedure isn't tough at all, but it helps to have small hands instead of big mitts like mine. Put some masking tape around the steering column so you don't scratch it up.

Besides the screws you've already removed, you need to take out the transparent panel and the small panel under the steering wheel so the column can be pushed down for clearance. I think it's only two screws that hold it and then unhook the headlight release override and get it out of the way.

You should be able to wiggle the cluster out enough to get your hand behind it and remove the speedometer cable...it's a friction clip fit, not a screw-on. That makes it easier to reinstall later.

Once the speedometer cable is released, you should be able to get the cluster out far enough to disconnect the printed circuit cable. After that it should just pull out completely.

It's not a tough procedure at all. Much easier than pre-'78 style speedometers and tachs. It just takes being careful.

you may get a little extra room if you can push the speedo cable through the firewall, maybe disconnect it from the cruise control first. |smile|

Well, I got the speedometer unplugged, and the cluster plug off, but the unit will still not slide out it does not appear to have enough room for it to come out. I dont want to damage anything is there some special trick?

Unless you drop the steering column, which shouldn't be necessary, once you wiggle the cluster free, you should be able to tilt the top of it toward you and work it out at an angle.
