Took the little women for a cruise to Park City yesterday and the Speedometer started ticking. I have not yet looked in the repair manual, but, can I take the cable off of the transmission and lube the core like I do the tach? I doubt that it's ever been lubed and the car will be 37 years old in November. I really don't want to pull the dash out again this year. Done it twice already and my hands and arms and brain are all healed up now. It is still working so I think that it is OK. I also know that I'm out of forum, so forgive me. I wasn't sure which forum to put this in.

You can disconnect at the tranny.
You should be able to remove the inner core, clean it, lube it and feed it back in the case.
Look at the connection at the tranny. If it is twisted, replace it.
Use a lift or jack stands for safety.

I started this topic earlier in the wrong forum. I'm hoping you are right Dave (dwright) about being able to remove the inner cable from the cable housing at the transmission. I've been reading all the past posts about the cable and it seems that everyone is pulling the cable from under the dash. Joel and others addressed this in a thread on 02/13/05. If you listen closely you can hear my tears hit the ground just thinking about removing my dash again. I had this same problem with my first car, a 62 Belair. My Dad and I lubed the cable with graphite and it was fixed. It was  more than a couple years ago though and I don't remember if we got to the cable from under the dash or off the transmission. Loaned my jack stands and floor jack to my son a couple weeks ago so I guess I'll just have to worry about it tomorrow.............or the next day.

Cry Sorry...the inner cable will only come out from the dash side....and yes, I can hear those tears hittin the floor....
What you might try, is taking the upper dash pad off, instead of removing the gauge cluster. I think you can get to the cable to release it from the speedo, and then pull the inner cable out from there....I think...

FWIW, I replaced my complete cable but the upper dash pad was not yet in the car. It was a tight fit but you can " un clip" from back of gauge, and remove entire assembly through f/wall. Two person job that took 30 minutes.

Had the same problem with my 80 awhile back. But it wasn't the speedo, it was the mileage tumblers binding up. pulled the lens from the speedo/tach and shot some WD-40. No problem since.

Hi All
Not sure if this is the right spot but I am also having an issue with my speedometer.
Was driving down to Funfest this last weekend and the speedometer started wobbling (best term I can think of) and then quit working.  I checked the connection at the trans and everything seemed fine so continued using the tach to guage speed.
Like everyone else don't relish the idea of taking the dash out, (not sure that's a job I want to tackle anyway).
Any suggestions or thoughts as to what happened and how to fix would be greatly appreciated.
thanks in advance

Does it have Cruise control? If not, then either one of the speedo gears has failed, the end of the cable has broken, or the speedo head itself took a doo-doo.
If it has Cruise, then the first place to look would be the plastic end of the inner cable from the trans to the transducer, where it screws into the transducer. The end can twist off, and cause the problem.

With NO cruise, you can take the cable loose from the trans, and spin it with a drill to see of the speedo works. If the speedo works with drill power, then gears in the trans is the problem...

My speedo "bounces" but does not tick.  I have cruise and have disconnected the cable at the transducer and the end looks OK.  Can I disconnect at the tranny and pull the core for lube?  If so , do I pull from the tranny end or transducer end?  What lube is best to use?
