Hello,
I have a 1970 with the light saddle interior. I want to get the steering column repainted but no one wants to take the column apart to do that. So I am redoing the part that moves with the steering wheel when it telescopes, since it is the worst and seen from the outside of the car. Here is my question. When looking at the column the paint is a different shade between the main column and the teloscoping part. I would like to keep it original and want to know if anyone else has this. I don't know if it was a different type of paint and faded. I kind of think maybe it is supposed to be off in shade. Maybe the two parts of the column were made at seperate places. If you got the regular steering wheel you got just the base and if it teloscopes they added the second piece. Thanks for any help.

Vette(s): 1979 Black coupe. 11256 original, documented, miles on it when I bought it in April of 2000. It now has 13100 on it. Oyster interior, like new. Everything original, everything works, except the clock. Paint has a couple of minor flaws.

Larry,
I might be wrong, but I believe that the column should be one color. Mine is, but it is Oyster in color.
It isn't real hard to remove the whole steering column. Just disconnect the little rubber doohickey by the steering gearbox, have a helper unscrew the bolts that go through the firewall, and drop the bolts that attach it to the dash,. Just unplug the electric connectors, and take it out...For a rookie, it will take maybe an hour, but after you do it a couple of times, 15 minutes... You do need a helper with the bolts that go through the dash though. One of them will just turn forever, the other one is solid on a plate that covers the hole in the firewall..

Larry,
It definitely should be the same color. If you need help with it, let me know, I will gladly come over and help you out.
