My turn signal does not automatically shut off when turning right. What could it be and how difficult is the repair.

Also, I was looking at a previous posting. I too have the horn rebuilding kit since my horn does not work. The horns work but someone glued the horn button on so I know the contacts are bad.

Will I have to completely remove the steering column for the repairs since I have a couple issues?

I hope I can return soom of the favors given all the incredible info I get from the site.

The turn signal is cancelled by the cam located under the lock plate, which is under the steering wheel. Two springs on the turn signal switch hit high spots on the cam to shut off the signal. Usually the cam wears or the springs break or pop off the turn signal switch. Once in a while the arm on the turn signal switch breaks off, and the entire turn signal switch needs replaced. You need to pull the steering wheel off which will require a puller, and then a lock plate tool to release the snap ring holding the plate on the steering shaft. Both tools can be loaned from AutoZone. If the steering column is telescoping, you will need to do a bit more to get to the lock plate, and will need to keep the column locked in the forward position to use the tool to remove the lock plate.

While you have the wheel off, the turn siganal cam also houses the rotating contact for the horn. There is a spring loaded contact on the turn signal switch which touches a round contact on the bottom of the cam. The cam in turn has a contact to attach the horn button. The fact that the button was glued indicates the contacts will be the likely problem. Just ground and of these contacts with the key on, and the horn should sound. IF not, the relay is suspect, or wiring to the switch from the relay. IF the relay clicks when the contact is grounded, check the horns, instead of the column. Hope this helps.

Ken,

What do you mean by forward postion ?

"and will need to keep the column locked in the forward position to use the tool"

I can't seem to lock the upper shaft in, it pulled right out when i took mine apart.

The sliding shaft the steering wheel mounts on must be "forward" toward the front of the car, or slid in all of the way. The lever you rotate to lock the wheel from sliding must be rotated and locked. Granted the lever has been removed at this point. But the shaft it mounts on will still turn. It must be turned to lock, or when you try to use the puller tool, the shaft just slides back toward you, like it's doing now.
