Hi,
I was wondering if anyone knows how hard it would be to remove the entire steering column from the rag joint? I'm trying to remove the bracket right above the column under the dash, it secures the brake pedal. Thanks!! |withstupid|

It's not a big deal, but my memory is fuzzy on the details. There are two (or three?) big nuts (bolts?) at the bottom of the dash, two bolts at the firewall inside the car, and two bolts that hold the rag joint together. There is one wiring harness with a curved connector just under the dash, too. You'll have to take down the little panel with the under-dash switches for headlights and wiper door to get at the steering column bracket. You also have to disconnect the transmission lock cable in the engine compartment near the rag joint. Fortunately, it goes back together only one way. Joe

That's a piece of cake. You need to completely remove the bolt from the rag joint flange to the steering shaft, apply some penetrating oil and lightly spread the flange for easy removal. Then it's the cable to the transmission (a cotter pin an 2 washers I think), 2 nuts at the firewall, 2 bolts from underneath the dash, and the ignition switch and turn signal connectors. There is a foam seal at the firewall which will probably get destroyed, but you can probably make a new one easily in some fashion. Be sure to mark the relationship of the steering shaft to the rag joint but it might only go back on in one position only. Be gentle with the steering shaft, it is part of a collapsable system that gets easily damaged because of the relatively fragile shear joint in the column.
