The 1968 Coupe that I acquired was in very rough shape body and interior wise. The seats were only frames and already removed, with the covers and foam padding, sliders and so forth already removed.

When preparing to de-rust the seat frames, I noticed a couple of things: 1) that the seat backs had framing in them for headrests and 2) there was a smallish aluminum tag on each of the seat backs.

I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about the tags (photo attached) and if they are original.

Also, where all of the seat back frames set up for headrests (which, as I understand were an 'extra)?

I have no plans to use these seat frames in my rebuild of the car as I have already picked up a complete set of seats (with headrests) sourced from a 1969 car. Does anyone ever worry about things like this when doing a restoration?

Any help would be appreciated.

Tags are likely a manufacturer's part number. Seats were already assembled and shipped to assembly line as such. Not 100% sure on the headrest bracketry.

One reason to worry about the metal tag would be if you are doing a "correct" restoration.  The NCRS might check.  The same w/ the headrests.  Not sure they were offered in '68.  Otherwise I wouldn't worry about it.

I added headrests to a friend's '66 and the seat frames didn't have the req'd brackets.  But the car wasn't factory correct when he got it, so no problem.

Just redone my covers and I discovered the same tag on my 77 seat frame. I think its a id number for production when they were assembled.

Yup. They were indeed a $ 42.00 option.

I'm going to try and match up the other numbers also to see if they match te seat part number, color or what have you.
