Vette(s): 1978 Indy Pace Car 4851 of 6502, Auto, L-48

Did anyone see the 1978 Pace Car that recently sold on the Barrett-Jackson Auction?  Someone was telling me today that a 1978 Pace Car just sold for like 60-70K.  What i'm wondering is, why was this Pace Car worth that much.  You can buy very low milage Pace Cars for 30K just about any day online.

I'm thinking it had to be one of the original Pace Cars from the actual race.  There were only 4 at Indy on race day in 1978.

Nothing special, the buyer is a pro wrestler who ended up donating it back to the same charity, who then ran it back thru the auction for another 40k.

There was a 69' L88 that went for a record 310K !!

Chairty auctions allways bring big money. It's a 100% tax right off they get the car for free.Everybody except the IRS is happy. If you watch BJ you realize that except for a VERY FEW C3's all our cars are considered entry level.Yes even you chrome bumper cars.BJ entry level is anything under $50,000

[/QUOTE] I banged my head at the R code mustang.I bought one in 1972 for less than $3,000,SCJ drag pack car black on black.Car was a couple of yrs old so it was still a new car.Not very many left. They left the factory with one thing in mind.1/4 mi at a time. The gear alone will tell you that.I of course only knew that it was a 4 speed with the shaker hood.Young and still learning I never knew why it would blow every thing off the road until later on after and old man (35) told me what I had.Traded it for a 69 Judge.Go figure.

Cilrah, to your original question--the PC had extremely low mileage, if I recall correctly (sorry, but several days worth of BJ watching and the numbers start to blur together a little!). I believe it was well under 100.

Still, the 60K surprised me...even though the plastic covers were still on the seats!
