On my last cruise this fall with my 82 collector's my speedo took a dump!!! The neddle had been jumping for awhile before it went out. I bought upper and lower cables and a new transducer from corvette central. Before i start to tackle the job I have a few questions.(1) can I disconnect speedo cable at the speedo from the front of the dash. Are those fasterners fake? or does the face come out by removing those fasteners??(2). is there a trick for getting the new cable thru the fire wall? |headscratch|

Your speedometer/tach cluster does remove from the front of the dash. The clear bezel comes off before you can access the screws that hold the cluster in. You may need to drop the steering column, but I didn't have to in my '78. It's not tough, just be careful when you wiggle the cluster out. You don't have to completely remove it, just far enough to get a hand behind the speedometer to release the cable.

If you have big hands, replacing the transducer is a real pain, though it is accessible. Be prepared to scratch or cut your hand a bit doing that, but it's only because it's a tight location.

Also, when you replace the cables, make sure you lubricate them with grease or you may end up with the same problem.
