What a trip to Carlisle!! We got our estimate for repair today. Just over $5,000 to replace the door, door glass, mirror, fix the front fender, rear fender, all the R&I and other labor and materials. Whew. All that from a trucker who said he didn't see me over his hood. We were stopped in a traffic jam after going through the toll booth off I-76 almost at Carlisle. Next thing I know I see this huge chrome fender coming at my door at about 3 mph. It never stopped, and I couldn't go anywhere. Slow motion nightmare. I'm just glad we found a used door glass at a vendor, so I could stick it in and at least drive without plastic taped to the side of the car. It doesn't go up or down, but it seals. I don't even want to screw with it, so it's a good thing we have a good body shop close by with a Corvette experienced body man. They found an A-condition door for it, already, so that will speed things up. I just can't believe how much they have to take apart to blend the paint properly. It was only slightly scratched on the upper front fender, and again on the lower rear wheel well but they are going all the way forward and aft (old sailor here).

Thanks. I forgot to mention how tough our cars are. The door took the whole shot. The fenders got scratched while getting the two apart. He refused to back up so I had to move forward (scrape) a bit, then back up (scrape) to get away from him so I could get out of the car. No impact damage to the sill, none to the interior of the door, no frame problems, nothing. Just the door skin cracked and crushed and side window glass broken. The door opens and closes and latches, locks, etc.  Actually, I would have fixed the door because it is still very ridgid, but bodyshop labor, etc. ya know. I did smile when the wrecker showed up for the 18 wheeler to pull his bumper away from his front tire so he could move. Bent it solidly into his tire, bent his fender, and screwed some other little stuff up a bit. All we had to do was get in and drive off. Sometimes there is satisfaction in the smallest things and at the oddest timesLOL

Glad to hear you weren't hurt.  Who would have thought that a little plastic (ok, and maybe some steel) could stop a Semi!!

I wanted a Corvette my whole life, but I never dreamed of all the wonderful people I would meet because of it!

DAM!!!!!
Glad ya'll were at least stopped when this happened! If he had been moving any faster....
Ya, our cars are pretty tough...at least the '73 up cars have the heavy side beams in the doors.
Could've been worse...could've had a tree fall on ya, from what I hear!

Glad to hear the repair has already started. What better place to find a replacement window for your ride back home?
We should have some great stories for the next issue of Shark Bytes!

Glad you guys were OK.  Semi got my stepson several years back and totaled the car.  The idiot had a bag in front of the passenger door lower viewing window so he couldn't see my stepson.

Hope the repairs go smoothly.

Not good. I hope your stepson was okay.

Trucks and Vettes don't mix. I saw another accident on that awful road to the fairgrounds (between I-81 and the Toll Road) where a C4 was hit on the driver's side by a semi that was turning onto the roadway. As in our case, the C4 was drivable, and the semi was going to need some work to get the bumper pulled away from the tire. Again, it was the trucks right or blind side. They need to do something so those guys can see over their hoods. By the way, my estimate came in at about $5200. Ouch. I'm having the pros do it. They want to practically take the car apart including front and rear bumper covers so the blend is perfect.
