Well it is officially time to take my baby off the road for the winter.  Today the weather turned nasty.

I am trying to plan for the eventual engine swap (probably the ZZ4) so am also wondering if there will be any clearance issues with duel exhaust since there is no provision as in the previous years with the holes for the pipes in the crossmember.  I don't want to drag the ground with a new system.  I also have to add on high flow catalitic converters which I am hoping will fit in the same area as the present converter.

Any help or experience is appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Martin

If your car is an automatic, you can swap the trans crossmember for an earlier one that does have the holes. Imma thinking they still had the dual holes in the crossmembers until '78.

My 79 has dual holes but I have a manual trans. I just bought a Pypes dual stainless x pipe exhaust system on ebay, they recomended one of these double hump crossmembers for your year, i'd be cool if you can pick up a stock one, then it would look like it belonged on the frame. I've seen the shorty cats around, I think Jegs? I got a screaming deal off of ebay under 500, but they said it was a one time promotional auction. I can update you some pics of the install when it's done. Are you going to run hedders as well?

I am also changing engine and tranny on my 82. I'm leaning toward the ZZ383 in front of a Tremec 5. Keisler sends a double hump X member with the kit.

This is new territory for me also.

Yes...but...can you unbolt it from the frame?

The auto cars had removable trans xmembers...the four-spds were welded.

I don't know when they stopped using the dual hole xmembers...78 was just a guess.

I checked the Mid America catalogue (www.mamotorworks.com). They have a True Dual Exhaust system made for "80 - '82s. No crossmember swap necessary. This system does not address the issue of cats, though.
Maybe it would be a good point of reference for a start.

I put a true dual system on my '79 (with auto trans.). No cross member issues there. It was DEFINITELY money well spent.

Good luck with your choice in exhaust. (And the ZZ4).

Well I'm thinking I'm enough of a big gorrilla that maybe I could unbolt itLOL with a little help from bubba anythings posible Rolling%20On%20The%20Floor%20Laughing

Is that ture for all the C3's with an auto trans or is it by year? Man if all you gotta do is bolt a new one on that is way cool! See! This is why I love this site, I learn something new everyday!

About 10 years back or so I swapped out some homeade motor mounts on an engine swapped 64 F250, I can't remember from who but I ordered this super cool engine crossmember with mounts. Turned out to be something I could have easilly welded up myself out of some tube steel and a couple of plates. It did cut down the vibration a little, but it was pretty dissapointing.

I had a true dual system bent up for the '81. First I tried the '80-'82 true dual system from Mid America. Nothing lined up. Had to go to a muffler shop and have the pipes tweaked. I junked the system after unsuccessfully trying to adapt full length headers.

'79 was the last year for the 2 hole tranny crossmember.
'80-'82's went with a single hump pass through on the passenger side.
My '81 is an original 4 speed car and the tranny crossmember does unbolt. And it has not been modified.

Click on my cardomain link. There should be a pic of my exhaust. All stainless w/freeflow cats.

Martin, I would have to say that looks like a pretty good standard to follow for the dual exhaust set up, very nice Darryl! What kind of cat's are those?

Amazing feedback from everyone.  I really appreciate your help.  Can the crossmember be unbolted without having to lift the body off the frame?  If so that sounds like the way to go.  From the picture of the 81 exhaust it is hard to tell if the crossmember was replaced though.  If it was not replaced then why bother with the crossmember because it looks really clean.  I guess I am just a little concerned with the clearance to the ground.

Thanks again!

Sorry 'bout the slow responce. I overlooked this thread. oops.
Thanks for the compliment BTW. The cats I believe are Catco. They are typical muffler shop 2.5" free flow units. The mufflers which you can't see in the pic are made by IMCO. International Muffler Co. They are stainless steel and they look and sound like a flowmaster muffler. "VetteCountry" Dick has them on his vette too.

This is all news to Me. I always thought that the Dual Exhaust X member Died when the Cat Converter came in in 1975. I had no Idea that the 80 was the first Year of the revised single  Exhaust  X member. I'm Curious if all the 80-81's have bolt in X members regaurdless of Transmission?  Richard.......
