HOW ABOUT USING SYNTHETIC OIL OR IS THAT A WASTE OF MONEY

Jimmy,
Stick with the natural 10-40. The oil of choice for flat tappet cam engines seems to be the Shell Rotella T 15w-40.

The previous link was mostly concerning oil during the break in period.
I would reccoment you use a good quality oil for everyday use that you can obtain easily and plan to stick with. 5W 30 or 10W 40 is fine.
I use 5W30 Valvoline DuraBlend which is partly synthetic. I change it spring and fall with very little road miles in between.

I would think that if you are going to be running off the shelf regular dino oil, you should be thinking about adding some kind of zinc additive to the oil to aid in lubrication. That is the reason most are going to Rotella. It still has some of the zinc in it but will soon be phased out also. Seems like there is a GM additive that can be used but I cannot remember the name of it right now.

You can buy GM EOS which is being sold again after being reformulated. I was told by a manager at a local GM dealership that EOS is basically GM's version of STP. STP also has the ZDDP additive that flat tappet engines need, particularly during break-in. The red container of STP has more of the needed additive than the blue container, but each has sufficient amounts.

Use Rotella T (Diesel Oil) if your still runnin' your lead burning engine. It still contains all the minerals your engine needs that was taken out of Mobil, Vavoline, etc. Your car will run a lot better. Check it out....read the labels. This is what I run in my car.........and I'm oil anal.

Jimmy, I will have to agree with the Rotella guys. I think the 5w is way to thin. A engine builder i know says the10w 40 or 15w40 Rotella is only oil that he found that has never caused a cam failure on engine rebuild start up.Synthetic oil is good but on older engines if there is a place to find its way out it will leak. I use Quaker State straight 40w XHD especially for diesel engines in my Duramax and Catepillar.I have to get that at oil distributor. Like the Rotella in my 69BB.Check prices at tractor supply.Best price i found.

I never would have guessed you were oil anal Mickie after that comment about the C5 hood looking like a but crack!!!!!!

Hey Gunslinger,
I saw you mentioned STP.
I've never used in my '79 L-48 motor. I worry that its thickness may add to sludge buildup.
Would it be good to use during the hot summer months?
