Hey guys, we need your advice.
We are currently baby sitting a 1973 240Z for my brother-in-law (been baby sitting it for about 2 years now). The car is in great condition (though not original; think it has a 260Z engine) and we're trying to convince him to sell it to us. This car has been in my husbands family from day 1. My husband owned it at one time--got it from his mom but later gave it back. Then it was given to his brother. His brother is just out of college. We're trying to convince him that a car like that is just too expensive and we need to take it off his hands
So a couple of questions:
1. Any idea what it's worth...roughly?
2. How do we convince him to sell?
By the way, the Vette and the Z look soooooo cute in the garage next to each other!!!!

Don't know about question #1, but for question #2 there are several things to point out:
- does he have a job yet?
- how big a balance does he have on his college loans?
- does he realize how expensive it will be to properly maintain the Z?
- does he know how expensive it will be to adequately insure the Z?
- ???
I'm sure there are a bunch more that other folks could come up with.

Good luck on convincing him to sell! Maybe $10K would convince him to give it up and buy something else???
About 1970 B.V. (before Vettes), I fell in love with the 240Z. That was after I found that I could not squeeze into a Saab Sonnet (another plastic car). Always wanted one (Sonnet, then Z). Not sure what yours is worth (especially with a 260 motor), but Z-cars have a following almost as committed as ours. (Sorry for using the word "committed." It's a touchy word for many of us Vettaholics, eh? )

Thankfully, my Vettitis has overcome that "first love."
Hope you get that little playmate for the T-top! :-)
I sold my 72 Z last year. It was all original with no rust. These early
Zs are famous for rust. I sold mine for $6500.00 and was happy with
that. My insurance was much less than my 75 Vette, like $400.00/yr for
full coverage. They are nice little cars. The carbs can be annoying to
sync but other than that they are a lot of fun. If I were you I would
at least attempt to purchase it. As long as you can keep it rust free,
your investment will be safe.
Good luck,
Scott

Vette(s): 1972 conv., sunfire yellow, blk interior, blk vinyl and convertible top. Off frame restoration with American Speed 383 stroker engine producing 500hp plus a 200hp NOS system. MSD ignition. Hooker super competition headers with chambered exhaust.
He might be more inclined to sell if you tell him the "storage fees" have eaten up the value of the car. Next months fee in now due.

GREAT idea, Jim. We've also been paying the insurance (well, driving it, too!) It's got a leak (source of which has never been found), so MUST be garaged. I can't imagine trying to maintain a car like that right out of college. That's our biggest fear....the car will end up trashed!!!!
On the other hand..... if hubby doesn't have the Z, I'm thinkin he needs a substitute....maybe a boy Vette?????

Hello! College and Trashed are not only synonymous but identical (except for the spelling, of course).
By the time he crams all his stuff in it to get to college, parks in a parking lot with other drunks (sorry, students) and gets massive door dings, the leak gets worse and the carbs never get sync'd cause he can't afford to have it done or some bubba hamfists it and screws it up, you bet it will be a POS.
I'm way past college, but not way past it enough to remember cramming in an extra person or two, and having a pizza and the occasional beer spill in the floor, not to mention the seed pops from my friends (I never did it, no sir).
College is great, but hard on the vehicle that accompanies you there (mine was a '68 Impala).

Please NOTE: His brother is just out of college.
I would look in Blue Book and make him a fair offer.
If he would rather have the car than the money, at least you tried.
Then go get that boy Vette for hubby.
