I'm thinking of buying a 3/4 ton diesel, extended cab, (NOT crew cab), Chevy or GMC. I know next to nothing about them other than they get decent fuel milage and have just about everything you can think of that my '82 Chevy p/u doesn't.
Seem to be pretty pricey though for lower milage vehicles. What's high milage for a diesel? I'm looking at this on one E-Bay. Whadda ya'll think? 2003 CHEVY DURAMAX 2500 DIESEL EXT. CAB ONE OWNER TX
I'd appreciate any info on what to look for and what to stay away from.

Dwain,
Diesels can go a lot longer than gas engines provided they have been maintained properly. Having said that, the Ebay truck has a lot of miles...about 37,000 miles per year since new. The price seems low enough but I would look elsewhere.

Thanks, guys. I know Scott's right that diesels last longer IF they've been properly maintained. E-bay stuff is hard to verify such info, unless it's from the owner. Think I'm gonna look locally first.
Jim, you got some good miles out of that one. What do you contribute that kind of miles to, a regular maintenance program, certain oil or additives or did you just get lucky.
When my wife and I drove a big rig, we put over 750,000 on a new truck in almost exactly 3 years. Still ran like new when we quit. They took good care of their trucks though.

When I do find one, I guess I'll be letting go of my '82. Still has the original seat covers and 103,000 miles. No A/C tho...
Guess I could go back to Classic Auto Air and have one installed since they did such a wonderful job on the Vette. NOT!

That's a lot of milage, not so much for the engine but for the rest of the truck! I would look local and try to get a lower milage one.

I've got 114000 miles or 180000 kms on my 2003 2500HD Duramax. I love it, it's my daily driver as well as my welding rig, a couple thousand lbs of equipment it most of the time. Extremely reliable, excellant fuel economy, very comfortable. Stay away from the 6 litre power stroke. Cummins Dodge is a nice truck, just not as comfy as the Chevy.
I have a 2001 F250 7.3 liter with 230,000 miles on it. Still looks and runs great. I love the truck and hope to exceed 500,000. It is a daily driver. I change my own oil and use Rotella 15w 40 along with motorcraft filter. Fuel filter, etc. I bring to shops.
I cannot speak for Chevy or Cummins, but the previous thread said to stay away from a 6 liter powerstroke, I concur.
I bought my truck one year old with 45,000 miles on it and paid 28,000.00. A year earlier it would have retailed for 45,000 being a Lariat. This is my second diesel 3/4 ton truck and I love them. Our fleet at work is all Chevy 3/4 ton 2500HD gas and they are holding up well, but get pretty bad mileage due to all the equipment in them all the time. If you keep your diesel around 70 mph or 2100 rpm you should get 20 -24 mpg.
Good Luck

Hope that helps!

Thanks. I appreciate the info from all of you. I've been checking prices on e-bay and local papers to get some sort of idea of the price to expect when I do find one I like. Looking at a couple of 1500's last week, the salesman seemed baffled by the fact I cared a lot about the total price and not just how much the monthly payments would be. Guess that's what most people nowadays are concerned with most.

Okey dokey, here I go again. Found a 2002 GMC Duramax, extended cab, one owner, 128,000 miles in very nice shape. Has the towing package, almost new tires, really clean inside and out. He lives just a couple of miles from me. The truck drives really good with a lot of torque, especially gittin' on it a low speed. He said it has a performance chip, which is adjustable, getting a couple extra mpg. He started out at $18,000 but now seems to be stuck on $15,500. Says that's below Blue Book. He wouldn't take $14,500. Sound like a good buy?

Any specifics I should ask him? All the injectors were replaced when they had that recall awhile back. Hey! I could tow the Vette anywhere I wanted to go.
