Pontiac ain't my thing, but I doubt if there was anything in the VIN that would help. Not even an engine size back then. There are some trim differences, but they can be "faked". Actually, I'm sure most all of it could be faked...look at all the L88 Vettes out there!
Maybe someone here will have some info for ya.
I have a friend back home that is a Pontiac freak. He owns a SWEET original 64 GeeTo, and a 70 TA. His garage looks more like a dealership parts department!

The vin tag will tell you if it's a real GTO. The first 3 digits for a 67 should be "242". 2=pontiac 42=GTO. The next 2 digits will be the body style. 07=2 dr. coupe/post, 17= 2dr hardtop. The sixth digit should be a 7 (1967).
The block casting# for the 1967 should be 9786133.rearn2go72 2007-02-06 10:47:38

Is that block casting just for a GTO and he will have to check futher to see if it's #'s match?zgator 2007-02-06 17:13:53

I'm not sure about the console in a 67 but I bought a new 65 with 4 speed and bucket seats and it did not have a console.
The 9786133 block casting number is for the 1967 year only.

Well, I just learned something new.
If, I'm not mistaken, there was no way to determine the validity of the GTO from 64 to 66. At least that's what I've been told.
Prior to buying my 74 C3, I was really interested in a 65 GTO, unfortunately the one that I liked were above what I had available to spend. If I had only known how much I was going to spend on my C3, I could have gotten my Goat !
Back in the 60's, I had a 65 Lemanswith a 421/3-2's/4 speed/433 rears. All I needed to do was change the trim (as Joel stated) and it was a GTO (clone) If I had installed a 389 you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
A friend of mine had true 65 GTO and we compared bill of sale ( for what reason I can't recall) what we noticed was that both BOS, ID the cars as Lemans models.
I also recall reading an article in a car mag, alerting investors of the collector car scams, and the early GTO's were the subject example used. The article actually did mention the that the BOS ID's the GTO as a Lemans.
The article included a story of a buyer who purchased a pristine early GTO for a decent amount. After owning it for almost a year, the new owner discovered that the car was a clone. How he determined that escapes me, but, the best is when the original seller was told, he gladly reimbursed the buyer the full amount.
It seems that the seller is a heavy hitter in the collector car market, and he was also led to believe the car was authentic.

Warbird,
You're right about not being able to identify both the 64 and 65 GTO. The vin tag on both years identified the car as a Lemans. 1966 was the first year that the "242" identified the car as a GTO on the vin tag. I think that contined through the 1971 model.
I had 2 new GTOs, a 65 and a 72. My ex-wife still has the 72 and the BOS identifies the car as a lemans with the GTO option.
