...I had checked the oil when we first noticed the coolant leak.the oil seemed to be clean no coolant in oil pan as far as i can see...
Just an observation, but I'm willing to bet your mechanic checked the oil too, and also didn't find anything in it.  At the least, he's willing to work with you.  Seems a shame to chuck nine years worth of otherwise good service.

For what it's worth, a new crate 350/270hp engine should be about $1500 or so his cost.

My son would love a 350 create engine or a ls1 from a z28, but would need too many other modifications and the cost would be very high. i can get
a remanufactured v6  engine from promar engines for 1899. Hes only 18 and I would be nervous with all that power for him. then again when I was 18 i bought a new 1966 GTO with 335hp,as my first car.

I have to agree with the rest...ya just don't know what kind of damage may have already started, or been done by the time the leak was repaired.
Also..overheating any engine, but especially a smaller one, is deadly. Chances are the pistons have galled the cyl. walls, and that's what is causing the problem, as well as bearing damage.

Sorry to hear about the damage....we can only hope the guy will stand behind his words, and work with ya on the replacement.
