Camaro convertible will debut in Detroit!

Automotive News | 11:37 am, January 4, 2007

DETROIT -- General Motors will introduce the Camaro convertible concept on the eve of the Detroit auto show at the GM Style event. GM says it will begin selling the convertible in late 2009.

The car will debut Saturday, Jan. 6, amid a fashion-type show combining celebrities, couture and cars. The show opens to the media Sunday, Jan. 7.

The Camaro convertible will be in Hugger Orange pearl tri-coat paint with twin gunmetal gray sport stripes. The color is an update of one offered in 1969. The convertible is based on the original Camaro concept revealed at last year's Detroit show, with some minor body changes to accommodate ragtop styling.

The hardtop Camaro will go on sale in 2009.

"The best follow-up to last year's award-winning Camaro concept is a Camaro convertible," said Ed Welburn, GM vice president of global design, in press release.

The convertible will have a V-8 engine. It will be rear-wheel drive with a manual transmission and a four-wheel independent suspension system with four-wheel disc brakes.

Welburn said: "It's a car that begs to be driven."

Vette(s): 1972 conv., sunfire yellow, blk interior, blk vinyl and convertible top. Off frame restoration with American Speed 383 stroker engine producing 500hp plus a 200hp NOS system. MSD ignition. Hooker super competition headers with chambered exhaust.
I agree with Alan and think it will be like the  GTO unless they were to drop the 505hp Z06  engine in it. That's possible since the Z28 did get the LT1 engine.

yeah, if you take the grille away, its a mustang.

GM designers really need to find new jobs..... I mean, glad to see the Camaro name come back, but lets not disgrace it like the did to GTO..

if they would make it just like a 67-69, it would sell like hotcakes.... lay off the "hip modern styling" and give us a true muscle car that WE can option...

I share the styling Concerns I hope that GM dose at least a Nose job and get rid of the Mucle Car Caddie Look. I like both the Mustang and Exspecialty the Cuda better as far as Looks go as they look more like the originals. Both the Camaro and Cuda will have Independent Rear's wich will make them out Perform the Stang but with a higher Price and less Sales. As tested the Stang GT 500 didn't hold up to the Standard Vette as per Car and Driver. I'd be interested to see if it has beat even the last Camaro offered Yet. Richard....

I agree with the above. It lacks the "WOW!" factor. GM just doesn't get it.
Maybe the market they are aiming for is the 25-35 year old male instead of us 50+ year olds.

Ditto to all the above. If they want to be nostalgic then put the cowl hood hood back on with some hood bling, bling bling vents.

Hide them headlights in the grill, maybe flip the grill up vs. from the side.

69 had that God awfull(IMHO)houndstooth orange / black interior inlays that really stood out. Put it back in it was kinda unique to that car.

Dump that Mustang rear body vent mold or place some grills in the rascal more like the 69 Maro's had.

Try somethin a lil different put factory sidepipes on, an heck why not put an updated factory rally mag on the beast.

Oh well those are a few of may GM styling rants...

I agree with the opinions about the new Camero, it is butt ugly. Gale Banks, I believe you are confusing the Cuda witht he new Challenger that Dodge will be bringing out. The Cuda was a Plymouth, and that name is long gone. I would by a new Challenger in a New York minute when the newness wears off and all the crazies are done plunking down 10-20% over sticker like I'm sure  they will. I have heard that the Shelby Mustang GT 500 will be offered by the dealers @ 15-18K over invoice. That is just WRONG and I would not buy one just for that reason!!!
