I wanted to get my son a basic phone that he could use to keep with him when away from home simply to enable me and my wife to get in touch with him. Didn't need anything fancy, and didn't need many minutes. So I wanted the cheapest phone and plan I could find.

I found it with PlatinumTel Wireless!
So the first part was to get him a phone. They have one that meets those needs for only $20!
Next, a service plan. The "Real PayGo" plan starts at as little as $10. That $10 is a pre-paid amount that will be decremented with each text/call/data use. He'll only use it for calls/texts with me and my wife and will not use data. At a cost of only $.02/text, $.05/min voice & $.10/mb data, that would take a long time to use up the $10! Now, there is one small catch - the $10 is only good for 90 days from the date of activation. But even if he doesn't use up the $10 worth of credit within that 90 days, I've effectively paid only $3.33 per month for the service! You simply can not find a better price, anywhere! Oh, and I'm not locked into any type of contract! In fact, you don't even have to give them an SSN.
So if you need a cheap phone and service plan for you or your kids, check them out. They also do have Android smartphones, if you need one of those.
If you do plan to sign up with them. Send me a PM first so I can give you my number. You can enter it during sign up and I'll get some free minutes!! :D

That all sounds great, Adam. I don't know how old your son is, but don't be surprised if your phone bill goes up quite a bit when he discovers girls.

how does that compare with some of the prepaid phones you can get in walmart, etc. watch the data charges it sounds little but the way they figure the usage could add up quickly. if you can you might want to put a block on it if it costs alot of usage.

How about coverage area, Adam? Can you get a decent signal in most places where you/he will be?

He doesn't have a smart phone, so he's not using data.
Coverage is ok. There is one kid's house in the 'hood that if he goes in there, he says it doesn't have coverage.

Hey Adam. my wife and I use our phones a little as possible, so pre-paid is the way we go. Right now through Virgin Mobile we are paying .20 per minute, and .15 per text. I will get a smartphone and use internet at times. Can you tell me how much data will take up 1 megabyte? If we decide I will get your phone number.

Garsh....next thing, you'll be tellin us yer wearin shoes!

I can see where having a youngster would kill ya on phone bills. I'm kinda old fashioned....it just ain't right seeing 5 year olds with smarty fones, imo. We got dumb fones that, believe it or not, take and make actual fone calls....remember those? We don't pay for any data, texts, i-net, or any of that crap....just fone usage, and it's pretty much a set price, with PLENTY of free minutes, and free long distance. 'Bout $40 a month for 2 fones. Sure glad we ain't got no young-uns that need fones.....
