They are hydraulic activated, and a bit of a pain to bleed. Pull the little rubber boot/seal away from the slave cylinder, and see if any fluid runs out of it. Also, check on the inside of the firewall, where the master is, and see if there is any evidence of fluid running down the firewall.
Bit of info on Fiero clutches...they are "special"...as in, you have to MAKE SURE the clutch you get to replace one is EXACTLY like your original. There is a little difference in the shape of the "fingers" on the diaphragm, at the point of contact with the throw-out bearing. Most parts places will tell you it is the same clutch as an S10 Chevy...don't fall for that! You'll get it installed, and the dern thing will not dis-engage. It needs that extra length on the fingers to work. Just thought I would throw that out there...btdt...

Did he open the bleeder valve yet, to see if the slave was staying "pumped up"? This would also create a heavier than normal pedal.
And, of course, there's the ever present possibility that the trans is broke...even tho it was ok before...longshot, there, but, it can happen.
I'd check the bleeder on the slave first, and go from there.
