1984 has been sitting for about a year and now the clutch won't engage. Any ideas where to start?

Is it a hydraulic or manual clutch?

Won't engage as in, it won't move, or you can't get it in gear with the engine running?
They are hydraulic activated, and a bit of a pain to bleed. Pull the little rubber boot/seal away from the slave cylinder, and see if any fluid runs out of it. Also, check on the inside of the firewall, where the master is, and see if there is any evidence of fluid running down the firewall.

Bit of info on Fiero clutches...they are "special"...as in, you have to MAKE SURE the clutch you get to replace one is EXACTLY like your original. There is a little difference in the shape of the "fingers" on the diaphragm, at the point of contact with the throw-out bearing. Most parts places will tell you it is the same clutch as an S10 Chevy...don't fall for that! You'll get it installed, and the dern thing will not dis-engage. It needs that extra length on the fingers to work. Just thought I would throw that out there...btdt... Adams' Apple2007-04-25 19:58:18

My friend  pushed in the clutch to start it and now it just sits there as if it is in neutral no matter what gear it is in. The pedal goes up and down but nothing happens. It was woking fine when he parked it.

Loosen the bleeder valve on the slave cylinder, and see if it releases then. If it does, the master is clogged, or there is something in the line stopping it up.

Thanks Joel, I was thinking the same thing so now he has a path to start. I will let you know what he finds.

The comments from my friend is:
I can start the car while the transmission is in gear.  I can easiy shift gears while the motor is running and the car will not move.Heavy pressure on the clutch peddle, it does not feel right.

It's possible that the fluid is not returning from the slave, and it's holding the clutch in the dis-engaged position. It's also possible that the center has ripped out of the clutch disc. I've seen that on a few Fieros. Don't make any noises, either.
Did he open the bleeder valve yet, to see if the slave was staying "pumped up"? This would also create a heavier than normal pedal.
And, of course, there's the ever present possibility that the trans is broke...even tho it was ok before...longshot, there, but, it can happen.
I'd check the bleeder on the slave first, and go from there.
