Vette(s): Silver 1974 Convertible - L82 4 speed Low miles (was only 8,900 when I bought it in March 2006) - Now 54K miles. Original owner bought it as an investment for son's college expenses. 2008 Jetstream Blue Convertible
While responding to another post, I reminisced about the station wagon I used to drive as a kid.

While my first car was a 1966 Plymouth Barracuda (with original light baby puke golden green paint), the car that I really learned to drive in and spent lots of time behind the wheel of was a 1972 Ford Country Squire Station Wagon - dark green with all the plastic fake wood grain you can imagine!

While the thing was a beast, it had one feature that was especially attractive.  It had a 429 with a thirsty four barrel.  I remember abusing that car to no end, doing burnouts, plowing through snow and just generally wreaking havoc.  It was also great because you could pile as many people as possible in it.

I remember one time, while racing someone at a light, I heard a big "BANG" come from under the hood.  I let of the gas and when my friends and I investigated, we found a broken motor mount.  The bang was apparently the sound that the air conditioning unit made when it hit the hood and created a substantial dent from the inside!  Oh well, you know what happens when you break a motor mount - Chain that puppy down to get more torque!

My buddies all drove wagons too.  I remember having races where one or more of us would stand on the rear bumper and hang on to the luggage rack on top of the car.  Not the smartest bunch, maybe, but we all survived.

Towards the end, when the car was getting about 7 mpg, I got my 'Cuda and started abusing it.  But to this day, after driving that wagon, I can still parallel park ANYTHING!

So, what was your first car, or the car that you really learned to drive in?  What are some of your memories?

I wanted a Corvette my whole life, but I never dreamed of all the wonderful people I would meet because of it!

Marshall, I learned to drive on a 1962 Plymouth Valiant, slant 6 push button. Could not get in much trouble there.
I then bought for my first car a 1969 Barracuda fastback 340 formula S. 4speed Hurst snake shifter. It was a dark green metalic.
Painted it the same color of "Soapy Sales" funny car back in those days (early 70's)
Plumb Crazy Purple (there u go TJ) with a light Lavender wide Hemi stripe down the center of the car. Of course over the big Hemi scoop on the hood.
Sold the thing for my first bass boat, and have regreted it every day since.OuchCryCry
Thanks for the memories......

The car I learned to drive in was a '62 Chevy Bel Air Station Wagon.  It had so much mismatched areas of touch up paint my friends said it looked like it had leprosy.  I laughed at them as they were all still on bicycles!

The first car I ever had in my own name was a '64 Pontiac Bonneville my Dad bought new and gave to me when I graduated high school.  That was one righteous automobile...dead reliable, big, fast and even economical on gas (24 mpg on the open road).  I still have fond memories of that 389 cubic inch four barrel and what it was capable of.  I still get angry at that guy that ran a stop sign forcing me off the road into a stream and rocks for what it did that car.

The first car I ever bought...the '63 Studebaker Avanti I owned for many years.  I treasured that car but sold it when I got married (the first time).  Eventually divorced...lost the car then the wife.  I lost all the way around on that one.

My first car was actually the brainchild of my dad and I am firmly convinced of the logic.  Every kid should get their first car this way.  (Note: I am probably a bit younger than most of you folks, so no nostalgia here for some 50s or 60s muscle car, but still a good story.)  I was 15 years old and looking forward to getting my license, working a part time job to save money, etc.)  Much to my surprise, dad traded a coworker for a wrecked 1979 Honda Civic that'd been smashed in the front.  Dad told me "If you can fix it, you can drive it."

I bought the repair manual and found a front clip, motor and all on a similar Civic in a junk yard that had been rolled.  In a couple of months, I had it all back together and running.  Learned it all from the book and by trial and error as there was no Internet in them days and certainly no Civic club to help.  Was actually something of a novelty at high school having the smallest car there.  I'd be at a party and come out to find my friends had picked it up and turned it sideways in the parking spot, totally blocked in - ahh, good times!

A Civic, tho, just wasn't cool, so I parked it up on the corner and had no sooner walked back to the house that the phone rang and it was sold.  Fresh from that success, I wanted to take on an even bigger project so next I hauled home a 1966 Mustang that needed a total restoration.  Thus began my car hobby.

Everyone always laments selling their first car and I still don't miss that Civic, but I was surprised to see a 74 Civic on the front cover of Auto Restorer magazine in March 2006.  Interesting read how revolutionary that car was and how important it was in changing the entire automotive industry.  One of my coworkers has two of them in nearly mint condition today.  Who would've ever thought anyone would ever collect and restore old Honda Civics?  Oh well, I still don't miss it, but I guess it deserves some credit.

I learned to drive on a 1975 Datsun B210 (manual 4 speed). This was in 1985. My first car was a 1974 Oldsmobile Omega (think 4 door Nova). Dad and I rebuilt the inline 6 in it, redid the interior, and painted it (he did the body work, I did the wet sanding, he did the painting). Let me tell you, that car had a lot of surface area! We later got a 350 fromt he junk yard, rebuilt it, and put it in. Yes, I ended up wrecking it (a couple times Embarrassed, the last one fatal for the car), but that thing was solid and I believe it prevented injuries to me both times.Wink

First car? Brand new 1969 GTO. No, my parents didn't buy it for me. I saved EVERY penny from about age 13 from an assortment of part time jobs. Accumulating $3200, I special ordered it and it arrived 3 weeks before my 16th birthday! Had to have my cousin and dad go pick it up cause I had school.
Insured it as a Tempest for a little savings. Don't know if I'd of been screwed if I ever made a claim.
Base 400 engine, 4speed, 3.90 rear, and a bench seat! Very void of options.
Stupidest thing I did was an impromptu drag race against a Charger right down the MAIN thouroughfare of town. I got caught! Cop threatened me with all kinds of things then wrote the ticket for 'careless driving'! Small fine. Very carefull after that.
Four years later I sold it and got into Novas. 10 years of them then CORVETTES.

Vette(s): 1976 Corvette Stingray L-48 Automatic Black

It was in 1978 I borrowed $475 from my brother and bought a 1963 Chevy Impala SS 283 Automatic white exterior with red interior. She was pretty solid with a half primered driver's door and a few small dents that I fixed with a hammer and some Bondo. I replaced the rear back up lights with regular tail lights and wired them in to have 6 functioning tail lights. The car had no wheel covers so I went to the swap meet at the drive-in on the weekend and got a set of '63 SS wheel covers for $20 and then bought some white wall recapped tires, then I was lookin' cool. She sat low cause the shocks were worn and the single glass pack sounded good. It was cool rolling down all the windows being a hard top and playing the stock AM radio on the local oldies request show (KRLA in So. Cal.) on Saturday night. Great memories, thanks!

Well now,  where to begin?  Guess solo drives to church in Dad's '50 and then '57 Olds rocket  might qualify.  Saw 100 mph for the first time in there somewhere one Sunday morning.

Then my first wagon,  still Dad's, but it was almost mine.  A '50 Willys.  It was a 6 cylinder with three speed and overdrive.

Then a '54 Chev before leaving for the USAF.  While stationed in France for 3 years,  I had a '53 Studebaker,  '51 Ford, '53 Ford sunliner (made in Belgium), '59 Ford Anglica (RHD) and finally a brand new '64 VW that I had shipped home.  Many great memories,  but remember the Studebaker.  When I bought it from another airman,  he said it had a miss.  No problem,  I was a mechanic.  After extensive troubleshooting,  found out the the miss was on #7 cylinder (maybe it was #5), but anyway,  eventually found out that there wasn't any rod or piston in that cylinder. I sold it to another airman,  told him it had a miss.

Three other wagons - '74 AMC Matador, '78 Olds Cutlass and '82 Delta.  Many other cars and memories.  Only one Corvette in the list.  Our current '78 pace car.

Did I mention the old Model A truck and the 1970 Datsun 240Z??  I'll have to dig out the photos.

Take care - GaryC

Vette(s): White '79 Corvette. It's a driver.
I had an old Checker. It had been retired from a fleet of NYC Taxis.
Nothing to brag about as far as speed or performance but lots of goof ball memories from that car!

Like some of you I learned to drive on a tractor. I spent summers on my uncle's dairy farm in "Upstate" New York. I remember the old Alice Chalmers "WD" & "D17".
At 10 years old, driving anything all by myself was a big deal! Even if i was pulling the (full) manure spreader.Big%20smile
