I'm not positive this is 100% true, but, as I have been driving for over 50 years I would think I should have noticed the little secret on my dashboard that was staring me in the face the whole time...I didn't...and I bet you didn't either...
Have you ever rented or borrowed a car and when arriving at the gas station wondered...mmm, which side is the gas filler cap?

My normal solution was to stick my head out the window, strain my neck and look, try to see in the side mirrors or even get out of the car!
Well ladies and gentlemen, I'm going to share with you my little secret so you will no longer look like Ace Ventura on your way to the gas station or put your neck at risk of discomfort or injury.
If you look at your gas gauge, you will see a small icon of a gas pump. The handle of the gas pump will extend out on either the left or right side of the gas pump.

If your tank is on the left, the handle will be on the left. If your tank is on the right, the handle will be on the right (see photo). It is that simple!

Don't feel dumb, just go out and share the world's best kept auto secret with your friends.

Not always true...depends on the manufacturer.
For instance, on my Cadderack, it's on the opposite side of what's indicated by the filler hose...
btw...just to be nit-picky(who...ME?!?), the tank on most cars is in the center, anyway....the filler is usually on one side or the other...
(just funnin wid ya, Larry!)

I see whatcha mean, Joel. Then, ya got our Vettes which have it in the middle. Ya think they'd standardize it to keep the confusion down.

Well....since you brought it up.......
naw....I won't say it. I hate to see grown men cry....
Actually, I had seen the info on the fuel filler/gauge thing before....here. I was intrigued, so I went and looked at the three of my cars that have fillers on the side.
The Mercedes doesn't have the gas pump icon to start with.
The Suburban has the gas pump with no hose(go figure
)
The Caderrack has the pump but the hose is on the opposite side from the filler.
It's possible that the manufacturers have started to "standardize" this lately, but it's prolly just like the location of the OBDII connectors that were all supposed to be located in the same spot on all cars after '96.....it ain't happened yet...sometimes it's like goin on a treasure hunt to find them dang things!
