My wife and meself have been contemplating the purchase of all new electronics around our house because of coming Digital TV and our own procrastination with upgrading our computer, cameras, stereo system and anything else ya can think of....we need to upgrade !!
So....we thought it prudent to start investigating the quality reports on different items which included a subscription to Consumers Reports.

When our "Buyers Guide" arrived I anxiously delved into the liltle book looking for the best products. During this search I came across the Chev. Impala which I have owned since new ..........""Holy Manure in The Chicken House"" they rated My wife's great little car to be a big pile of Horse Cookies.

2001 Impala, dark Carmine Red with every available option. 130K miles and I just installed new tires, brakes, and tie rod ends. Oil changed every 3-4K ....Trans. serviced 3 times and cooling system has been backflushed at 50K & 100K. The car looks and drives like almost new.

They said this car had major engine/gasket problems with major repair bills.
My question to the forum...I think I had read somewhere that this car and other GM products of this era has had problems with the coolant "Dex-Cool" This product is responsible for gasket failure and coolant clogging/gelling. I take Consumers Report with a grain of salt (so to speak) but I know these cars have had coolant related issues.
I was going to keep the car for another 15-20K but after reading this, maybe I had better start looking for more than electronics!!

Any engine guys out there care to comment on my pile of "Horse Cookies" with it's Dex-Cool !!!!

Rick, I know very little about engines, but I would say if you already got 130K out of the car it don't owe you anything.
Trade or sell yourself it would be hard to get much for it with that kinda miles no matter how good the car looks.
Maybe you nipped that problem in the bud by flushing at 50K? I think most people don't flush their coolant that soon or maybe at all.
Only you know how its been serviced and if its been a good car for you, than the heck with consumer reports.
They don't say much good about Corvettes either.

Yea, I kind of wonder the same thing about Consumer Reports. I think they get their rating on cars by talking to the actual owners. But you have to admit it does give you some guild lines, but maybe not that good??
So who knows??

Jeff is right on, you probably won't get much for it. It's value probably isn't much more than a year depreciation on a new one. So I would drive it until it dies. I have an old Ford Aerostar that is worth all most nothing so it is now the training wheels for my teenagers. When it dies I will just tow it to the scrapyard

Hi Rich, I can't answer your Dex cool question objectively. I run it in my 00 Silverado and my 01 Vert too with no issues.
I believe vehicles react to the way they are cared for. It sounds like your maintenance schedule is a plus and so is the vehicles service.
If it were me I wouldn't seel it until I wanted aomething else.
I like the consumer repoerts guys to provide me with a forethought and the articles provide some leverage when going to buy. (Like, "Hey Rich I read in Consumer Reports the Impala has had alot of problems. Would you take $500 less? etc...)
Other than that it is in their opinion.......
Man, replacing all of the electric componets in the house.... I wish I had your $$$$ I would just burn mine then to keep warm!

I agree with Tux, I have a 2000 Silverado, its got 101,000 miles now, and I have never had a problem with it. I was going to sell.....but couldn't figure out why. I just bought new tires and got the Chevy manuals for it, (just in case something does go wrong with it).

Keep it and run it till something major happens.
That's the best way to keep the overall costs down.

Thanks everyone for the replys.
I usually do run the wheels off my cars then put them in the Walmart parking lot and within a couple of days I get around $2500 for em....CASH...no checks (serv. records sell cars fast).
I have a 94 Ford super cab with all options and 92,000 miles on the clock. It also looks new and has impeccable service records. People ask me quite often if I want to sell it......No Thanks !! Great looking old trucks in a small community attract a lot of attention.
A car sales friend of mine once told me the dealerships try to get these great old trucks out of town so they won't be available to buy and they can get a better shot at selling something newer and more expensive to make a higher profit.......

Now I have my Corvette and it will soon be a great looking/running old car. My other cars are stock but this Vette is going to be my "goody bag" of tricks...

Lets just say I don't think I will be getting anything else borrowed . I believe I have it "electronically" covered now..
As for the trade... well, you can drive the C5 anytime you want.... Only catch is you have to be here in Indiana to do that....
