I have to do this on my wifes 2000 Grand Cherokee. I got the pads at Autozone so I could get the instructions on how to do this. I know a lot about car maintaince except brakes. This Jeep has anti lock brakes and the instructions say to drain out about 2/3rd's fluid to releive the pressure before putting on the pads. Is this right or can I get around this? After that it says to bleed the system and if all this is true it's going to be a two man job.

 remove the calipers,the old pads,,take a large "c"clamp and push the pistons all the way in, you can then slide in the new pads and they should slip over the rotor,,you may have to open the bleeder on each brake line as you tighten the c clamp, but just a second to relieve the pressure so that the piston will move,, if so be carefull to never let the resevoir get empty or you will have to bleed out all the brakes,,try opening the piston without bleeding first, hope this makes sense,, its not a hard job just aggrevating,,good luck,, rick

Thanks Rick. Thats kinda what I thought. So you have to remove the pads before you can get to the piston? I'm not sure about the "good luck" part!!!

You will need to loosen/open the bleeder on the calipers before pushing the piston back into the caliper. ABS modules don't like having trash flushed into them backwards!
Open the bleeder on one caliper, after you put a hose on the end of the bleeder, and put the other end of the hose in a can, or other container, to catch the fluid. Then push back in on the piston. Once the piston is all the way retracted, close the bleeder. Repeat at each corner.
You really shouldn't have to bleed the system at all after replacing the pads. Just be sure to pump the brake pedal a few times before driving, so the pistons will move the pads out to the rotors.

You can either remove the pads before pushing the piston back in, or simply push against the pad itself...either way wil work.

Thanks Adam. I think I can deal with that. The instruction sheet says to remove spring/end caps ect. Stuff I haven't seen until I get into it.
