Here's my delemma,
1998 Lincoln Town Car: I changed front and rear shocks. Now the air ride suspension quit. I didn't even touch any of that stuff.

First I replaced a 50 amp fuse that was blow. The air compressor worked for a little while. Then quit. Fuse is still good. Both air springs were sucked up tight.

Bench tested the compressor, that's ok. Air springs did inflate somewhat. I have no power at the wire harness connector. No power at the power interupt switch in trunk.

I did notice what I think may be a "leveler switch" mounted to the rear axle. Could it be possible that when I had the shocks off that it may have over extended that switch?

I'm at a loss. Any advice is appreciated. I don't want to go to the dealer just yet.

You should deactivate the air ride when raising the car off the ground. The switch in the trunk is the one that shuts it down.
There is a lever attached to a switch on the rear suspension that tells the ARS module the height of the car, and it is possible it did go too far, but...I've never seen that happen, unless you allowed the suspension to drop on that side when you took the shock loose.

I've worked on a ton of those dang things...I hate em!
The most common problems I've run into was o-rings(for the lines) leaking at the compressor, and the comp. itself failing. Might have replaced one/two of the switches on the rear suspension. Prolly replaced more of the little lever arms than that, cause they seem to fall off a lot, at least around here.

There should be a valve stem on the compressor that will allow you to air up the suspension with regular shop air. That is good for finding leaks, but not much else.
There should also be a relay somewhere. I can check tomorrow when I get to the shop to see where it may be, if ya want. Might even have some troubleshooting info, but I ain't sure...

Yep, that was the first thing I did. Open trunk and turn off the switch. I remember years ago a guy at another shop I worked at didn't turn off the switch and blew up a air spring. I never laughed so hard. The boss didn't think it was funny though.

It has just rear air springs.
Did they make a regular coil spring option for those cars?

I asked the customer if the car remained level after setting overnight. He said yes. Everytime I run power direct to the compressor to pump it up, the car will rise a little, then settle back down to the weeds. Odd.

If you have some troubleshooting info, I'd appreciate it.

This car has 115k on it so it's no telling what it could be.

I had a '98 Mark VIII with that problem and replaced a level sensor which fixed it. The guy at American Air Suspension in East TN is a wealth of info. I also learned a ton from the Mark VIII forum;

http://www.markviii.org/htdocs/dc/dcboard.php

All the air suspensions work the same from model to model. The geezers in town cars probably don't have their very own forum.

Thanks for the help.
I gave up. Time was becoming a factor.
So I went down to the local spring shop and got a set of coils and converted over. Much more cost effective and very simple to do. Customer was happy with it.

But I have one last question...
Can anyone tell me were exactly the Air Suspension Module is located in the car?

The dealer gave me the wrong location. I need to find it and unplug it to turn off the dash light.

On a Mark VIII the air ride compressor is located in the forward portion of the passenger side front wheel well. I would expect a Town Car has the same location.

Or to find out for certain call this guy;

He knows them inside-out.

I have the info on a different computer here at home, Darryl, but it is not hooked up right now. I'll need to run to my storage building and get a monitor, keyboard, and mouse to look it up, but I can do that later today, if you don't have what ya need by then.
I did check out the info at the shop yesterday, but the whole system info was about 50 pages, and I just didn't have the time to go thru all of it to see what I could send ya that would be helpful.
I have the same info here, just don't have that 'puter set up at the moment...Adams' Apple2007-12-31 19:50:30

Thanks Dave & Joel,
 I appreciate the help.
I scheduled my customer to come back on the 7th of Jan. He needs a headlight assembly and a set of horns anyways. That will give me time.

I unplugged the air compressor, interupt switch in the trunk, pulled the fuse. The dash light was still lit. The read someplace that I have to find and unplug the Air ride control module. That will disable the light.

Dave, I'll give Eddie a call and see what he say's.

Thanks again!

Darryl, according to Mitchell AND Alldata, the module is behind the glovebox...kind of a rectangular shape, with the connector sticking out of the top of one end. I got this other puter up & runnin, but I couldn't get a printout, or transfer it to my other system...hth

Thanks Joel,
I'll pull the glove box out and check it out. I'm hoping it doesn't interfear with any other function if I disconnect it. If you get a chance, can you look on the wiring schematic and see what wire runs from the module to the dash indicator light? Maybe I could just snip that wire to disable the light.
