I got this from a guy on one of my "other" tech forums(for transmission specialists)...thought it might be worth sharing....

Our school was contacted about supplying students for a program that
Goodyear is sponsoring for NASCAR. It is called G.R.A.D. (Goodyear Racing
and Diversity). They sent me a "manual" on it and I met with a rep from the
advertising agency that is implementing it for Goodyear. They wanted me to
supply 12 juniors from our "diverse" population. The students would be
treated to a day at Michigan International Speedway including a pit pass.
They would get free eats and grandstand seats for the race PLUS
transportation to & from the race track. Scholarships are also involved.
After I read over the information I discovered that what they REALLY were
asking for was only African-American and Hispanic kids. Apparently NASCAR
is trying to "broaden it's fan base" by showcasing minorities. When I told
them I would be willing to help them, but only if the group were truly
"diverse", I was told that would be OK as long as 1/2 the kids were from
their target group. I said "no problem" since 1/2 my kids at black. I was
told we were the ONLY school contacted in SE Michigan and that I would be
the "coordinator" of the Michigan area. They are doing this in 5 markets.
That was last Friday. I spent Monday and Tuesday gathering information on
the students I had coming in from the four schools we serve and contacting
many of them to tell them about the program. They were supposed to call me
on Tuesday so that I could assure them that my administrator and school
would buy into it. When I got no call back, I called twice (leaving voice
mails both times). Then I e-mailed them. FINALLY at 10:30 PM they called
back to let me know that they had changed their mind because a school in
Detroit could supply their "diverse population" (read that 100% black). I
told her that I did not appreciate being used like that. I told her where
she could shove her "diversity" program.
I think NASCAR is going to shoot themselves in the foot on this one. Think
they might turn off some of their fan base? I do!
Thanx for letting me vent!
