Vette(s): Silver 1974 Convertible - L82 4 speed Low miles (was only 8,900 when I bought it in March 2006) - Now 54K miles. Original owner bought it as an investment for son's college expenses. 2008 Jetstream Blue Convertible
I'm glad I had a great fourth, because my fifth of July certainly didn't start out too well.  Not only did I wake up in the middle of the night with a horrible ear infection, but I had truck problems.

I got outside dark and early, started the truck right up and started to drive down the street when I remembered my sunglasses (need those later in the day).  I returned to the house, put the truck in the middle of the driveway (of course) shut it off and ran inside.  When I came out and tried to start it again, it was DEAD.

The Vette saved the day by getting me to work (almost on time) after having the wife help me push the truck into the street.

I left work mid-morning to go to the doctor and broke one of my Convertible Commandments.  It was a nice, warm sunny day with no rain and I kept the top up.  I figured with the ear infection already, more wind wouldn't help.  The good news is that the A/C has held it's charge and still works!

After the doctor, I got the truck jump started to take it to get a new battery.  I would have just gone and gotten a battery and put it in myself, but I had noticed some time ago that the terminals had corroded to the point that they were almost gone and would need replaced (with the battery), and I was not in the mood to do it.

Truck died on the way to the shop.  While I'm waiting for the tow, I found the receipt for the battery in the glove compartment.

Finally, the point of the post...!  Battery was installed a month after I got the truck - October 12, 1998!  Mileage was 54,898.  In the 8 years and 9 months of the battery, I've driven the truck over 177,000 miles!  Averaging driving six days a week and starting it four times a day, I estimate that the battery turned over that 360 Magnum over 10,000 times!  Not bad considering that although my 30 day warranty had expired (I bought the truck used), the dealership gave me the battery for free!  I think I got my money out of it!

In case you're wondering, it's a Mopar battery and the truck is a 1997 Dodge Ram 2WD.  Currently has 232,117 miles - a mere 214,000 some-more miles than my Vette!

I wanted a Corvette my whole life, but I never dreamed of all the wonderful people I would meet because of it!

It's kewl they took care of yours, tho!

Well, congrats on almost 9 years of life... joel too... seems to me we once gotten an 11 year old group 24 battery back a couple years ago(group 24 is a top post that would have been used in vettes(among several other cars/truck) back when chevy used top posts(pre 70 or so).  Was told the battery was still in the truck after 11 years and the owner(one of our dealers( I work for Interstate Batteries)) just decided it was "time" to get a new one.  Just goes to show if the moon and stars are just in right alignment, that weird things can happen(considering it seems that the majority of our warranty batteries are in the 3 year range(usually either burned up from a really "good" alternator/regulator or someone left the lights on for a week....*sigh*) .   Anyhow... Trying to think of mopar batteries manufacturer back then... there is basically only 3 major manufacturers of batteries now,  Johnson Controls, Exide and Deka/East Penn.   While i'm not a big fan of Exide(bit bias i know, as our batteries are made by Johnson Controls), Mopar batteries were once made by them(Exide)... can often tell by the well cap shape... exides are often rectangular, Johnson Controls are kinda six sided(like a stop sign, the corners are angled).. and Deka's have no "caps"(actually they do, small individual "caps" about dime sized for each cell)... just a tidbit of info... now-a-days nearly all (Not ALL, just nearly) batteries you find are JC's...

Hey Jim,
Are these new batteries really "maintenance free"?

Well... maintenance free is kinda a misnomer... newer batteries are a lot better about losing electrolyte(water) but.. unless its a "sealed" battery(like a Delco) that you cannot remove the vent caps, then, its really not "maintance free"... one should take a glance at the water level now and then(once/twice a year maybe).  Overcharging will boil out the water, which is basically the only maintanance there is(other than cleaning the posts/connections....  Unless you have an AGM(Absorbed Glass Matt) battery(commonly called "gell" batteries), which still require occassional cleaning of the posts and connections....

"I knew it"! batteries are strange things. I've had old timers (almost as old as me now) tell me to change the acid annually and they bragged of batteries lasting past 10-12 yrs. and yet we were told , never to add acid, just distilled water to a battery. But I figure, if you can't maintain the fluid level, you don't have much of a chance of longevity. ...Wierd Confused.

Does this mean I need to check another fluid levelQuestion Does it have a dip stick, if not forget it COSTCO  has batteries right?

Hmmmm, changing the acid annually??? new one on me.  Its not recommended to change the acid at all in a battery, or to Add acid to a low level cell...  just water. Reason being, that the acid/electrolyte in a battery is 35% acid 65%water, which gives the solution about 1.1275 specific gravity. In keeping with this, if the level is low, and you add more acid, the specific gravity will be higher than it is meant to be(the percentage of acid will be higher).  This tends to "burn" the plates, reducing the life of the battery.    Yep, you're right if you cannot maintain the fluid level, its pretty much a gone.  And yes as a matter of fact, Costco does have batteries ;)

Thanks Jim. I think that's the first time I've ever heard a reasonable explanation of the actual technology. It's nice to know what you're talking about when the subject comes up.
