There whe go : the first year , daily driving to work , whe went to France with the boat and returning it "just" started badly at the last pump station. Once home i went to dealer and collected my car after a few days....Repair costs where about 1000 $.So i asked why a rebuilt starter motor wasn't done instead of a new one ?A NEW ONE ? asked the dealer , DO YOU KNOW WHAT A NEW ONE COSTS ? Oeps,

A few weeks later my tranny was defect.Back dealer. Collecting the car the explanation was that the intermediate gearbox was bolted to the main gearbox with a gasket inside , very delicate. So oil from intermediate could flow to main resulting in no oil above and all the oil under , driving your intermediate gear box into pieces... They fixed it and wanted me to go on regarly checks for oil level ( to be done on carlift ) to keep my garantee. They did it 3 times , changing that gasket....
Once all the cooling fluid was on the carpet...they placed a new heat radiator in the car , just 1 year later the same again
.....
Once i drove up to a red light and pushing the brakes... NOTHING ! i managed to slip-slide trough other cars and stopped to see... the brake pads where gone , also the brake pistons , also the brake fuid ....
Once whe came back from the sea and i could not give gas... seems to had lost all the linkages , axes, springs etc. on the carb.It was as the hole thing exploded. Put the idlingscrew high and returned home cruising ......
Again 4 weeks at the dealer because they had to order those pieces ! ...
My back door rusted trough , they placed a new one.
Once coming back from work i exploded the engine ! BONK ! and finishd. There was a piston drive shaft right trought the carter.

( it was a V8 ) Ok, they installed a rebuilt engine AND a rebuilt gear box because they tought that the BANG would have also damaged the box.Driving home from the dealer i stopped and phoned him that it was very difficult to shift gears. They answered that was "new" and had to be broken in... it never did.
That winter i wanted to leave for work in the morning and had no power steering. ??? . Looked at the car and all my steering oil was on the road.

And here i didn't even mentioned small problems : NO WAY everything worked. Either the lights, horn or some gauge seemed dead .
Ok , they did alot under garantee but always give me a mini cooper replacement car at 12 $ a day...In those 2 years i drove that little bastard MORE than the Range.
The most beautyfull day of my live was buying a Toyota jeep and leaving that rubbish english joke of a car at the salesman.
Warning meanwhile one of my friends NOT to buy such a car he DID !!! and YES , after 2 years his story is about the same lenght , it's our amusement meeting eachother , he telling storys of what went wrong ....
oboyoboy, all is thrue....

Not a unique story. There are many good things about the old ranger rovers, but even those were miserable to find parts for here in the states. I often had to tear it down to identify what it had, then order the parts and wait weeks to get them. And English cars, or anyone using Lucas electric has problems. They would go anywhere if you could get the parts, and keep them running. They were tough old buggers. I don't know how the newer ones perform.
"Why do Englishmen drink warm beer? Lucas refrigerators!"
I am a service advisor at a Land Rover dealer.....How about a customer buying a new car and making it to the first traffic signal....and it needs a trans? True story.....400 miles....needs an engine.....Very expensive junk.............

Here's a Range Rover dealer and with the new Range Rover Sport coming out he invited our Toyota dealer for a test drive around our village to show off with the 400 HP . And Yes , quite impressive engine.... BUT , only a few miles away they where at the side with a broken suspension....
beeing at the garage at that time with mine disaster quite a lot , o man , what i have seen there......NEW cars beeing completely dissambled , surching for problems as whe encounter with 35 year old ones....
During my time the person at the reception desk left the garage for other work....he couldn't take it anymore... i think he got nightmares from the phones
