"Machinist's Workshop" recently published information on various penetrating oils. The magazine reports
|UPDATED|2/2/2013 2:52:39 PM (AZT)|/UPDATED|
they tested these products for "break out "torque" on rusted nuts and bolts. A subjective test was made of
popular penetrating oils, with the unit of merit being the torque required to remove the nut from a
"scientifically rusted" bolt
.Average torque load to loosen nut
:No Oil used 516 foot pounds
PB Blaster 214 foot pounds
Kano Kroil 106 foot pounds
WD
-40 .238 foot poundsLiquid Wrench 127 foot pounds
AT
-F/Acetone mix 53 foot poundsThe ATF/Acetone mix is a "home brew" mix of
50150 automatic transmission fluid and acetone. Note this"home brew"
released bolts better than any commercial product in this one particular test. Our local mach
inist group mixed up a batch, and we all now use it with equally good results. Note also thatLiqu
id Wrench is almost as good as Kroil for 20% of the price. ATF/Acetone mix is best, but you can alsouse ATF and lacquer thinner in
a.,50/50 mix. ATF = Any type of Automatic Transmission Fluid. •|UPDATED|2/2/2013 2:52:39 PM (AZT)|/UPDATED|

I've used WD40 or PB Blaster for years. But it sounds like your "home brew" is easier and cheaper to use. Gonna have to mix up a bottle. Thanks for the heads up.

This has been making the rounds on most of the Tech forums recently. Prolly works just fine, too, but then again...so does other stuff.
I like ZEP 45, meself. I have not tried the Heat Riser Lube from GM, but I've heard from enough in the know tha that stuff is the cat's meow.
Anything that "creeps" into the threads of a fastener is going to help. If it just sits on top, around the outer/exposed threads, it ain't gunna do much good.
I'll prolly give this concoction a test somewhere down the line. Can't hurt.

I've never had a problem with breaking bolts loose. That is if you call leaving your pound of flesh and quart of blood no problem. I've been VERY lucky over the yrs only snapping 1 bolt. That being said I always use WD 40 or PBlaster. Sounds like the ATF/acetone is deffinately worth a try.
Dave C..........My mantra: I can not be bought!! Long and short term leases available.
