Makes sense to me.
I always use cruise control when I drive, that helps A LOT.
The article is slanted a little, I believe, if you fiollow it to a logical conclusion, we would all be walking. NO BIKE RIDING, because that would take more food energy because of the higher speed.

And we drive Corvettes because they are economical right?
And my other car is a Corvette too.... so I walk to work in order to fund my habits....

Jokes aside the article is applicable for a wide range of drivers.
Back in the fuel shortages of the early to mid seventies, I owned a 1972 Ford Grand Torino 400 CU auto. I was going to try and make this car get more than it's 14 mpg hwy.

I tuned that baby up with new plugs/points/timing right on the money and aired my tires slightly over spec.

Took a little trip to see my inlaws, drove only about 50-55 mph, coasted downhill and got a truckers run at hills.

Got back to my house and eagerly filled up the car at the neighborhood station and ""Viola"" I got 14 1/2 mpg. A whopping 1/2 mpg more for all that!!!

Since that event I always just put my foot in it and go where I want when I want.

Sounds logical to me. I don't plan on going over 70 on the upcoming trip to Hot Springs. Gotta try to save somewhere. Wish I had cruise control on the Vette.

The difference between men and boys is the cost of their toys!!
The last paragraphof the article states
"Driving 10 miles per hour faster, assuming you don't lose time getting pulled over for a speeding ticket, does have the advantage of getting you to your destination 50 minutes sooner on that 400 mile trip. Whether that time difference is worth the added cost and risk is, ultimately, up to you."
I GLADLY sacrifice a few dollars on a 400 mile trip to save 50 minutes!

Besides, I don't even know HOW to go slow....

.....................I don't think I know how to either!
Shoot, why should we waste our energy worring about the cost and gas mileage??!

I figure that my car runs good, why change that
.....why not just cruise in my baby with my arm hangin' out the window a bit....like I'm in HEAVEN???!!!

Steve,
That's a funny story. A little long, but funny.
150 mpg. All you have to give up is your time. Which I never seem to have enough of.
I use CC all the time too. Usually set at 74 mph.
Don't forget, our Vettes are aerodynamic, so we can cut right through the wind.
And we have powerful engines that can handle the resistance.
Let the good times roll. D a m n the torpedos!! Full steam ahead, matey.

I have "Variable Speed Cruise Control" in the '74...when it starts slowing down, the pedal gets mashed a little harder...when it gets too fast(?), the pedal comes up a little...works out pretty well for me...
Cruise Controls work best on FLAT ground/roads. Once you start goin up hills, it tries too hard to keep the speed, and it will wind up hitting passing gear, then immediately it lets up. If it is hilly enough, you'll spend half the time up-downshifting....not exactly fuel efficient.
